THE SECOND EXPRESS.

' AUCKLAND MEMBER COMPLAINS. The withdrawal of the second express from the Main Trunk railway service was referred to by Mr. Mander. in liis -speech last night. He said that lie thought that the Government did not take up an exactly fair position in regard to tho matter. It whs Giardly fair that the South Island fihould have two expresses whilst the North Island had only one. He thought that it would have been better if the Government had given each island a second "express three days a week. Tho North Island railways paid much better than those in tho South; and if they wero not entitled to more consideration they wero entitled to at least as much. ; The Prime Minister stated that it was the intention of the Government to put the second express on again not later than October 1. 110 hoped that it would bo patronised better than on the last occasion. Mr. Laurenson (Lyttelton) said that it as not coiTGct to speak of there being two expresses throughout tho South Island. There was only one express a day right through from Christchurch to Dunedin. It was true that there was ail intermediate express between Dunedin and Christchurch, but to say tliwo were two expresses right through- the South Island was ridiculous.
