6 NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBr Qr.Ettcbn.l TRACK GALLOPS AT TRENTHAM. About forty horses arrived at Trentham on Saturday and Sunday, nnd these additions to the numbers already thero mado tlio tracks present a very busy appearance yesterday morning. Work did not commence in earnest until Into in tho morning, as a heavy frost had fallen, and trainers were waiting for the tracks to feel tho sun's influence. No jumping wae attempted until about 10 o'clock. Most of the work was done on tho 'outsid'o of tho course proper, which provided heavy going. Haskayno was one of tlio first of tlio Parliamentary Handicap candidates to appear. With W. lfvan in tho saddle, he did steady work. ■ Sir Knox (W. Ryan), Redloh (W. Price), and Commotion (l?. Langstone) were associated in a gallop over a mile. Tho lastnamed had slightly the better of matters at the finish, tho tinio being lmiu. 56sec. Pliroso had Tlio Hover for a companion in a milo gallop. Tliero was nothing to choose between tlieiu at tho finish, but The Hover carried a good deal rngro weight than the mare, ami tho time (lmin. oGsee.) was a capital gallop on his "part. Domino, Watchchain, and Otaliu were sent, out together, and covered seven furlongs in lmin. 38£ sec., there being not much to cliooso between them at the finish. Royal Arms and Crown Pearl ran homo together from tho seven-furlong post in lmin. 39sec. Both horses finished very well, and looked, as if they ;ould liavo improved upon the time. The gallop was ono.of tho most. attractivo of tho morning. Diavolo (H. Tolford) did useful work without being asked to go against tlio watch. Vi, who looked full of life, wont round with a light-weight in the saddle. She was pulling hard the whole way. Loch Mabin galloped a milo in lmin. 57sec., and another Parliamentary Handicap candidate, Ceylon, was also present and doing useful work. Tho hurdlers, Cally Bridge nnd Princo Eddie, hopped off together at tho milo and a quarter post to try conclusions on the flat. Before going a furlong, Cally Bridge gave a peculiar cough, nnd immediately started to bleed at the nose. Ho was pulled np, nnd Prince Eddio was left to complete tho round alone in poor time. Fireworks and Tho Native did two rounds together. They hurried lionio over the last mile, tho final iivo furlongs taking lmin. Msec. Otakura nnd Lady Vladimir galloped a milo together at a good solid pace. Parky finished, somo lengths in front of Styx in a gallop over six furlongs, run in liiiin. 22 2-ssec. Clmrlerosa and Holywell were companions in a five-furlong flutter, tho time being lmin. 7 2-ssec. Turna took tho same (imo over the samo journey, while easily defeating Elevated. Teviotdalo and Gnome covered tho last four of fivo furlongs in 56sec., whilo Georgo took similar timo in running ovor four furlongs ahead of Lanyard. Tho Sir Laddo—Betsy gelding was bet ter than Silverstrcain over fivo furlongs covered in 55scc. Secret Liuk spurted over half a milo by herself. • Red Earl and Wnione jumped seven hurdles in company, the formor giving a first-class display. Lugeon, Tho Sportsman, Royal Medal, and Kia Ora did two rounds of tho steeplechaso fences, and all jumped safely. Hautere, Donzel, Daylight Bill, and, ■Napper Tandy later did a round of the' steeplechase fences together, and Daylight Bill did a further round alone. Donzol's display was a poor, one, but tho others fenced well. Useful work was also accomplished by Grit Lawless, Oakley, Hoanga, Paremata, Peary, Waiau, Braeburn, Waitoto, Bollin, Beacon, Mummer, Sir Mosely, and a host of others, > Goodwin Park lias been scratched for all engagements at tho. Wellington Pacing Club's winter meeting, and Lady G<rorgia has been scratchcd from all first day engagements. Trainer V. Collello has sold Sail PI me, and Iho Birkenhead maro will go into J. Munn's stable. The consideration is mentioned as 200gns. The victory of La Marquise in the Royal colours at Lingfield would bo very popular, as tho Foal Plate in on» of the most important races yet won by the reigning Sovereign. La Marquise is evidently expected to prove useful; as she has been engaged in tho Oaks and St. Leger of 1914. Her. sire, Mprcovil. will bo remembered as the liorso on which L. H. Hewitt won tho Cambridgeshire in 1908. Lyrique, tho ICaramu candidate for tlio Trial Plate, was not on the tracks yesterday, but did useful work on tho roads. A half-brother to San Wai, and a sister to Braeburn are among tho horses at present in V. Collello's stable. The same trainer has also a five-year-old gelding by Nestor, from Tho Hempie (Natator— Romp). Twelve or fifteen years ago Tho Hempie was owned and trained by Collello, and he must have won altogether over twenty races with the chestnut mare, who had the distinction of being unbeaten as a'three-year-old. Among the mares t'o be mated with Malt King this year is the New Zealandbred Petticoat (Multiform-Bloomer). A local sportsman, who decided to motor to Trcntham to see tho track gallops yesterday, overlooked the fact that it was winter, and that the work did not commence until after breakfast. Ho arrived at the course just about 5 a.m., only to discover that the hoof-beats would not lie heard until about half-past eight o'clock. One of the main features in connection with the new courso of tho Dannevirko Racing Club will be the straight, which, if anticipations ' nve realised, soys "tlio "News," should rank amongst tho fastest racing tracks in Now Zealand. Tho straight will be nearly two furlongs long, and in that distance a gradual slope of four feet will be providrd between the entrance to the straight and tho winning post.
