EARLY SETTLERS.
A RECORD OP GOOD WORIC. The first annual meeting of members of the Early Settlors' and Historical Association of Wellington was held in the Tiflin, ' Manners Street, last nigllt. Tho Hon. J. E. Jenkihson, M.L.C., presided, _ raid thero was an attendance of about thirty, Tho annual report set out that in framing tho rules ot the association more regard was paid to enlisting tho sympathies of a large membership than to building up a strong financial fund. _ Tho committeo had given closo attention to the historical work of tho association, but tho lateness of tho day militated against a couiploto record of early happenings being furnished, as many of tho old identities had passed away. The committeo had been fairly successful in securing photographs of'many pioneers and early scenes, and they wero now looking forward to securing some suitablo room in which to store and exhibit tho photographs. Negotiations had been entered into with tho City Council, with a viewto securing a room in tho Town Hall, library, or Nowtown Library. It was felt that in time a valuable and interesting exhibit would bo secured for preservation. Arrangements wero being inado to hold meetings moro often than in tho past. Tho balance-sheet showed that assets amounted to ,£llß over liabilities. In moving the adoption of tho report anil balance-sheet, Mr. Jonkinson said ono thing that had not progressed as well as expected was provincial organisation. 11l (lie coming year it was hoped to send into the country one or two members of tho committee to establish branches, and ■arouso sympathy. Mr. Jonkinson, referring to financial matters, expressed his thanks to Mr. J. F. Taine for .a donation of X 25. Tho election of officers rcsVilted as .follows:—President, Hon. J. E. Jonkinson (pcj elected); vice-presidents, Messrs. F. P. Wilson, G. London, J. Smith, L. Stowe, E. Best, and Horn C. M. Luke. M.L.C.; general committee, Messrs 11. Baillie, 11. W. M'Lood, W 11. Bennett, W. A. Edwards. L. M'Kenzie, E. M'Leckio, W. E. Moore, It. A. Wright, E. Hosie, G. J. Brogan, J. I'. Kockstrow, and Dr. Cameron; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr. ,K. IC. Lyouj hon. auditor, W. C. D. Morpeth. A motion that the annual subscription be raised from ss. per annum to 10s„ and that each member receivo a copy of tho journal gratis, was put by Mr. Wilson. Tho proposal was defeated, after a short discussion. Mr. J. H. Collier moved: "That tho committee make all arrangements required for a representative deputation to wait on the City Council and the Prime Minister to urge" tho co-operation of. the Government, Parliament, tho municipalities, press, and public of New Zealand in organising a national recognition of the great national services freely rendered to our raeo and nation by tho Wakofields in securing New Zealand for tho Empire of which wo form an important part.' 'Tho speaker thought it was a disgrace that somothing was not dono ill memory of tho men. who had performed such threat services for Now Zealand. After discussion, the motion was put to the meeting, and carried. li; was dccideil to assist at tho pageant to be held in aid of tho Boys' Institute.
