ABSENTEE OWNERS.
TARANAKI SETTLER'S COMPLAINT. A settler at Purangi, twenty-four miles out from Inglowood, sends this reply:— I.—Yes. School consists principally of Native children. 2.—Returns from the sale of products are satisfactory. 3—Road communication has been recently opened up with tho Stratford branch railway. 4 —Yes. Wo have a daily mail from Inglewood, and also tho telephone. . s.—The Stratford and New Plymouth shows are of benefit. G.—Tho Department of Agriculture is of direct benefit, principally through tho medium of the "Journal of Agriculture." B.—There are no renters of farms here. The land is mostly held in fairly large areas for grazing. 9.—There is a fair amount of Native labour. 11.—Several farms in this district are lield by absentee owners, tho land being held for speculation, and no ono is living on these farms. The school, store, ana post office all 6uffer from this.
