NOTES AND COMMENTS.
IBt Guncob.l TRENTHAM WINTER MEETING. At Trcntham on Saturday the grass gallop was again open, and as tho morning was fine, most of tho trainers present took tho opportunity of giving their horses solid work. The track was on the heavy side, and not favourable to fast gallops. ' A feature of tho morning's operations was ■ the jumping, and practically all the candidates sent over the big fences acquitted themselves creditably. Tho Native and Waitaroro went two ! rounds, clearing irb all twelve of tho ■ fences. Both jumped well, and pulled : up satisfactorily. Another of the Porirua ' jumpers, Waione, cleared seven steeple- ' chaser fences in good style. • Fireworks had Silver King for a companion over ten fences, which were cleared ' without mistake. ' Silver King is one of tho most promising jumpers at the course, , and has pleased, tho track watchers at every appearance. Kia Ora, Sportsman, and Royal Medal, who arrived from Invercargill the previous afternoon, were tried over five of tho .fences, ,and made a creditable first appearance. Red Earl, another arrival from the south, was also schooled, but his performance was not so good, as ho ran off at one of his fences. Hoanga, who is in great heart, made Bismarck appear a novice as ft jumper. The Auckland horse clears his fences in llic same old bold stylo as when lie won at Trcntham two years ago. Napper Tandy and Nedra also did 1 well in separate tasks over the big country, 1 while Grit Lawless and Oakley were others that did useful schooling! work. On'tho flat. Ceylon (M'Donald) and Sir Knox (Berrv) galloped a mile together. Neither of the pair is a good beginner, but Ceylon was quicker into her stride on Saturday, and led until nearing the finish, where Sir ICnos was holding his own. Time, lmin. 51sec. Commotion, (Langstone) defeated Semaphore (Berry) over seven furlongs in lmin. 39sea. Grandee, who broke away too 6oon for a companion (Undecided), covcred sis fur-, longs in lmin. 21sec. Over five furlongs, Holywell occupied lmin. lOaec. in defeating Charlcrose. G cor go took half a 6eoond longer in defeating tho Sir Laddo—Betsy gelding. Soporific also took lmin. lOisec., but Waldemar was a second longer. Useful work on tho flat was also accomplished bv. Tamainupo, Hautere, Styx, i Pavlova, Parky, and a largo number of others. Wednesday's contest for the Wellington Steeplechase will be the twenty-ninth. Tho greatest weight ever carried to victory in the event was 12st., with which Plain Bill won in 1900.. kali Kleshna, who won the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington on Saturday, finished second to Confide in the same raco in 1911. In tho Eclipse Stakes, of 10,000 sovs., to be decided at Sandoivn Park (England) on Friday, the contest will probably Vfc betveon Louvois, winner of the Two Thousand, and Tracery, who was brought down ivhen leading in the Ascot Gold Cup last month. As a steeplechaser, Coradjill, who finished third in tho Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington on Saturday, could scarcely be better bred. In his pedigree, famous sires like Talk of tho Hill, King Tom, Gang Forward, and Lucifer are combined with such strains as those of Panic, Macaroni, Glorious, Julian, Avcnal, Kelpie, and Fisherman, white tho direct female line traces to Juliet. Quite recently Coradjill was a winner at. Williamston, and he would probably have been one of tho favourites for Saturday's race.
