ON THE HOCKEY FIELD.

THE SENIOR RESULTS, .Victoria Col. ... 9 Metropolitan 0 • Karori 3 Insurance 3 United 2 Wellington 1 Hockey players wero blessed with admirable conditions for their gamo on Saturday—the weather was perfect, and the grounds in splendid order. Interest was mainly concentrated on the Victoria C'ol-lcge-Metropolitan match, tie spectators being treated all through to an exhibition of splendid play. The Strack Bros, were in evidence tbtoughout. Oreo. Strack's characteristic dashes down the field with his opponents in the rear wero very pleasing, and gave one an idea of tho splendid form in which tho 'Varsity men manage to keep themselves. At times Metropolitan gave tho Collegians something to think over. This was particularly so in tho case of Sheeran—a dashing centre-forward. The gamo was well contested, and, on their showing, Metropolitan should do well next season. COLLEGE & METROPOLITAN. The Greens set the pace, and immediately placed the Reds on the defensive. Realising that things would be lively, Metropolitan, led by Sheeran, put up a staunch defence, and, for a time, managed to keep a formidable pack of forwards on the outskirts of the danger zone. Eventually, after a scramble, Sheeran (Metropolitan) gained possession, and, closely followed Dy Cody, carried play down field, and looked like scoring. Hero Geo. Strack came to light, and changed the venue,. After repelling vigorous atStrack passed to Carl Strack, who, in turn, transferred to Griffiths. The last-named, by faulty hitting, threw away a certain goal. The game maintained tho original pace, and the spectators \vero occasionally treated to glimpses of brilliant play- in attack and defence. Tho Strack Bros. (3) when operating in combination, especially in the attack gavo the Red backs something to engage them. Carl Strack's work on tne right wing was specially good. Ho centred well, and Cleghorn was enabled to score. After gaining possession) from the ''bully," Cleg Horn, taking the opportunity, again found tho net. The Greens now had tho Reds hard pressed, and throughout tho second spell wfcre masters of tho situation, Strack, Cleghorn, and Griffiths having no difficulty in adding further to their score. The game ended as stated above. Mr. Cockerill was referee. INSURANCE & KARORI. The gamo between Karori and Government Life Insurance was not eo interesting as that between .Metropolitan and Victoria College. Tho Government Lifo Insurance team has improved considerably of late, and hav'o been responsible for more than, one surprise. These- teams wero evenly matched on Saturday, but at various stages of th>e game "Insurance" seemed to have things their own way. In the first half, Karori found themselves defending most of the time. Campbell (centre-half) occasionally shook things up, and gave Cameron (full-back for Government Life) plenty of work—work, however, which Cameron was equal to. Davies (Karori) kept the Blues moving now and again. He obtained possession of the ball on sevoral occasions, and with anything like a clear'run ahead he was dangerous. It was in this manner that he obtained two goals on Saturday. Tho second spell increased in pace. Karori being apparently determined to improve their score. Williams, tho Blue centre-half, apparently had now acquainted himself with Campbell's tactics, and time and again lie was successful in frustrating his adversaries' various moves. From a line-out, Robinson, "Government Life's" new forward, secured, and moved play into mid-field, where, after some give-and-take play, M'Clintock found -the net, the gamo ending as above. Mr. Mackenzie was tho referee. . UNITED & WELLINGTON. The match between United and Wellington disclosed nothing brilliant. Millar—United full-back—certainly did some good work, but opportunities we're wanting. The second spell was much the same as the first, neither team disclosing meritoriou9play, and tho game ended: United, 2; Wellington, 1. Mr. Manning was the referee. ■REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. The selectors. (Messrs. C. S. Falconer, C. Campbell, and Alfred A. Bennett) have chosen the following team to represent tho Saturday Association in tho match to be played against the Wednesday representatives at Karori Park next Wednesdayi Goal, Dwyer (United); Tightfull, Pullyn. (Metropolitan); left-full, M'Eldowney (United); riglit-half, M'Gregor (Metropolitan); centre-half, Campbell (Karori), captain; left-lialf, Burbidgo (Victoria College); outside-right, Robbie (Insurance); inside-right, C. Strack (Victoria College); centre, G. Strack (Victoria College); inside-loft, Boyd (United); out-side-left, Griffiths (Victoria College). Emergencies: Forwards, Davies and Murphv (Karori); backs, Thompson (United) and Gaze (Victoria College). This team is not necessarily the final selection for tho shield match- with Hawke's Bay on. July 26. Any player unable to take part in the above game is requested to inform the secretary, Mr. A. A. Bennett. Tho team is asked to meet the selectors at Karori on Wednesday, at 2,30 p.m. LADIES' MATCH. The mooting of Girls' College and Syrens proved an even and well-contcsted game. Miss M'Donald scored Syrens' only goal in the first epell. College Girls matte .many attempts to reach tho net, but their forwards failed them. Halftime found Syrens leading by I—o. College improved somewliat in tho seoond spell, but the failure of their forwards was still noticeable. Tho Syrens, however, could do no better, and the game ended without the score being added to by either side. Miss Laurenson showed up wtfll for College in the second half, but Misses Brown and Thompson proved too strong for their forwards. Messrs. Davies and Lang were the referees. , MATCHES ELSEWHERE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) , Auckland, July 13. 'Another surprise took placo in the hockey competition, Auckland, the leading team, being beaten by Mount Eden by a goal to nil. University beat College Rifles by 2 to nil. United drew with North Shoro and Ponsonby drew with Unitarians. WEDNESDAY ASSOCIATION. The selectors of the Wednesday Association have chosen the following team to play against the Saturday Association, (tho match will take place at -Karori' on Wednesday, July 16):—Caterer (goal); Paget, Dolling (full-backs); Cameron, Clementson, I-o Compto (halves); W. APEwan (captain), May, Sheeran, Hill, Brooker (forwards). Emergencies: Jones, Parrant (backs); Cavill, Bree (forwards).
