MASTERTON NOTES.

The monthly meeting of the Mnsterton District High School Committee was held on Thursday evening. A letter was read from the Minister for Education, stating, in reply to a resolution passed by the annual meeting of householders, that tho , discontinuance of the supply o£ freo school books had been decided upon aitsf careful consideration of the matter from all points of view. ' At a meeting held here oil Thursday, iit was decided to form a Wairarapa Polo Club. About a dozen names of playing members were handed in. Mr. G. H. Perry was elected secretary, and other officers were provisionally appointed. It is expected that the club will with a strong membership. The Mastcrton Harriers held a sealed handicap rate at. Carterton on Thursday for the trophy presented by Mr. G. R. Sykes, M.P. The handicap was won by j Purston, with OOsec. start. The annual dinner and distribution of prizes in connection with the OtfaMPefence Riflo, Club took placo on Thursday evening. The Mayor (Mr. J. M. CoTadine) presided. Tho nrizes were distributed a3 follows:—Champion shield and medal, Mr. R. J. King; C. and A. Odlin's trophy (handicap aggregate), Mr. F. Mititon; Mr. H. G. Williams's rosebowl, M.r. W. Feast; Mr. G. Hyde's rosebowl, Mr. G. Hyde; Mr. G. R. Svkes's trophy, Mr. J. Murray; Mr. A. Beetham's trophy, Mr. W. Swan-'on; Mr. A. W. Hogg's trophy, Mr. R. Hniith; Mrs. H. G. Williams's trophy, Mr. J l . Minton; i ' M'Gregor Cup, Mr. G. Hyde; club tfophy, 'r Mr. R. J. Kins; Mr. J. Murray's trophy, Mr. T. Smalhvood; Mr. R. .1. King's trophy, Mr. G. Hydo; Mr. G. Hyde's trophy, Mr. G. Tings-twin. During tlio evening a number of to.nst3 were honoured, anil musical items wove rendered. In a tug-of-war at the Buchanan reception, in which eight tenms competed, the slaughtermen at the Waingawa freezing works proved successful.
