"A MESSAGE FROM MARS." Tho Hamiltou-Plimmer Company appeared again. Inst evening at tiio Opera llouso in l'iuero's powerful problem jilay "Tho Second Mrs. T'auqueray." Tho compauy is to bo credited with a most artistic and trenchant reading of the play. Seldom, indeed, is it that we are afforded tho pleasure of witnessing a company which aims at and readies so high nil acting standard. Mrs. Brough's admitted and admired, powers us an emotional actress were displayed to tho very best advantage as Paula Tauquerny, and Mr. 11. l'limmer's Aubrey Tanqueray was marked by a certain clear incisiveness of style which was a capital contrast to tho vacillation and moodiness of his distraught wife. Mr. Winter Hall, Mr. Sidney Sterling, Mr. H. R. Roberts, and Miss Eva Collins, Miss Beatrico Day, and Miss Bale wero also responsible for some clever work. His Excellency the Govornor and Lady Liverpool were among thoso present. This evening the company will make its final appearance in Wellington, ill Robert Gan.thony's comedy "A Messago from Mars," and, judging by the booking, there should bo a bumper house. On this occasion Mr. li. R. Roberts will impersonate the most 6elfish man on earth, Horace Parker, Mr, Arthur Styan will appear as tho tramp, Mr. Winter Hall as tho Messenger from Mars, Mrs. Brougli as Aunt Martha, and Miss Ena Collins as Minnie Templar. THEATRE ROYAL. Tho Theatro Royal programmo is strong this week, and all tho turns are of high merit. Frank Sidney and his company of talented artists havo created a great impression with the sketch "A Morning in a Sportsman's Garden," introducing tho sensational jumper and dancer, and tho success of Matthews and Mack, tho American travesty "stars," is undoubted. Tho curreut programme will be shown for the last time this evening, and tho Crimson Ramblers will rnako their last appearance, THE DANDIES. Tho New Dandies continue their nightly offering of mirth And music at tie Concert Chamber to jthe delight of lovers of light entertainment. With such bright and talented peoplo as tho Mißses Rita and Lily Fitzgerald, Mr. Ford Waltham, Mr. Atliol Tier. Mr. Robert Agnew, and Mr. George Edwards there are no dull moments throughout the long programmo. A ohang© will be presented 'tlhis evening. HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE. Interest in the screening of Charles Dickens's story "Pickwick Papers" is well maintained at His Majesty's Theatre. The well-known story abounds with incidents which lend themselves to pictorial reproduction,, and tho film makes one of tho most interesting subjects which has been shown for a long time. "The Lager Beer Industry" and "Tho Honour System' are other interesting films. A matinee will be held this afternoon. "QUO VADIS ?"• At his Majesty's Theatre on Monday, July 21, what is described as tho greatest picture play l success to date —"Quo Vadis?"—will be screened for tho first time in Wellington. Tho coming of "Quo Vadis?" is said to herald tho dawn of what will bo a new era in picture entertainment, insomuch as it hotels the screen for the entire evening. Its extent mid completeness are said to bo remavkwiblo, yet so faithfully havo tlie thrilling scenes and spectacles from Sienkiewicz's famous bQok been preserved, that tho interest not only does not flag, but increases as tho unfolding progresses, until, when tho climax has been reached, it is claimed that tho spectators aro left longing for more. This, in face of tho fact that the picture is 8200 feet long, , is, something, that tho compilers of tho film may well bo proud of. Incidental scenes of note aro: "Tho Burning of Romo," described as a most realistic picture, viows of the Coliseum and tho great arena, wherein occure an awe-inspiring spectacle—tho Christians awaiting tlieir martyrdom wlien twenty lions aro loosed upon them by tho Emperor Nero's orders; tho gorgeous feasting hall of the.mad'Monarchr'and' others too numerous (o particularise. "Quo Vadis?" is stated to havo sustained its European and Australian reputation as tho strongest attraction over screcnod. "Alligator Farming depicts a remarkable enterprise in California, in which hundreds of alligators are reared for 'commercial purposes. "An alligator drawing a toy-cart, in which is seated a little girl, is a strange sight. The
supiiorting items are also thoroughly entertaining. SHOKTTS' PICTURES. "Tho Doctor's Crime," a. drama b.V Patlie Bros., is tho cliiof item on tho interesting progranuno now being screened at Shortts' Theatre, continuous pictures. Tho Edison Company aro represented by "The Dean's Daughter." lho Gaumont Graphic, and "Scenes Eound New ll.vmouth," also arouse a good deal ot interest. This programme will ho screened for the last time to-day and to-night. On Monday tho usual change of programme will he given. ORGAN RECITAL. Dr. Fvffo will give another organ recital on tho Town Hall organ to-morrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. The programmo comprises Lemaro's "Marche Modern," Hollins's "Spring Song" (by request), "Sunday Morning," Hopkins Wely's "Offcrtoiro," and "Largo" (Handel). There will bo no charge or collection. "THE SMART SET." "The Smart Set," a costume comedy company, with a number of now ideas in this form of entertainment, is to commenoe a season at tho Town Hall Concert Chamber on July; 26. The company includes Mr. Walter George Mr. Maynard Dakin (late of the English Pierrots, Mr Ernest Parkes, Jlr. Edgar Hplland, Mr. Edward Elliott, and Misses Georgio Martin and Emily Kroll.
