THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. [BY Glbhcox.l . The training boxes in nso at Trentliam aro exposed to tho southerly winds,'..anil on cold, wet winter mornings a horse might as well be stripped in the open lor all the shelter they provide. It has been suggested by somo oi tho trainers that a new row of sheds should be erected opening to the north. In the alternative, it is suggested the fence at the east end mjight uo opened to allow trainers to use tho boxes in the saddling paddock, tho grass being railed oil' as a prohibited area. The suggestion seems wortny of consideration, it only on the horses' account. In future all welter races at the Avondale Jockey Club's meetings are to lie run over distance of a mile and a furlong. Tho Auckland horses Tamainupo and Walehchain aro due by the steamer Victoria this morning. Their respeclivo trainers, J. Thorpe and J. Williamson, arrived from Auckland last night, and will tako the horses namlcd to Trentham to-day. B. Keeper arrived at Trentliam from Blenheim on Wednesday. He brought with him tho bay gelding Commotion. Mr. Geo. Morse' has been reappointed liandieapper for the Avondale Jdckey Club, and Mr. .Edwards has baen reappointed "starter. 'The club has voted an increase of salary to the secretary, Mr. H. liayr. Nedra and Amber and White arrived at Trentliam last evening, in. charge of J. Gravestock. P. Neagle is bringing Sir Mosely and Diavolo to Trentliam. B. Deiley will ride the'former in the Trial Plate, and H. Telford will have tho mount on Diavolo in the Parliamentary Handicap. In the latter Tace, W. liyan will have the mount on Haskayne, while S. lfcid will pilot Ceylon. S. Waddell is expected at Trentham tomorrow with four horses, probably Haskayne, Lyriqiie, Peary, and lioilili. ' Ridicule, who -had engagements in the hack events at Trentham, was yesterday withdrawn from all races, and the Hawcra trainer, T.-Goddard, will now be without a representative at tho meeting. Vi went particularly well in a gallop onco round at Hastings tho other morning, and the Merriweo mare is undoubtedly very well. ' A good many horses were working at Trentham yesterday morning, but tho sand track was tho only availablo one, and so gallops of any' importanco were accomplished. Soma jumping may lie attempted this morning, • Tho Southland horses engaged at Trentham a.ro duo to reach tho course to-day. M'aitarero is -generally -credited with jumping as well, if not better, than ever, out the old horse is not reckoned to be nearly os fast as ho was when ho registered his uulucky performances in big events seven or eight years ago. Coyloii's gallop at Trentham on Tuesday was a creditable one, as the Signalman rnaro carried more weight than Sir lvnox, who galloped with her. Tho Spaniatd camo into tho market for the Wellington Steeplechase yesterday, but this was only to bo- expected in view of the good form' which he has recently shown.
F. D. Jones, the well-known horseman, followed the Gisborno meeting by a few days' shooting in tho King Country. Ho is coming to Trenthani for the winter meeting next wfcek. It is reported that Mr. Gibson, one of the stipendiary stewards in Now Zealand, may shortly return to Australia. Captain Jingle, who is to contest tho big steeplechase at I'lemington to-morrow, is at present the favourite for that event. Ho was given a race in u six-furlong welter last Saturday. Advice from the other side states that tho New Zealand 'chaser is looking well- and going well, and one of his'admirers declares that he has now thickened out until ho is almost as broad as ho ia'long.' The sama author-, ity advised tHpf Wimmera was last weeklooking better than, ever, so that his poor showing •' (poor in comparison to his previous efforts) in tho 'hurdles last Saturday would have been disappointing-.to his party. A new type of hurdle is in use .at Trentham. . It is substantially built, on a slant, and mounted on feet, which are to be stapled to the ground. ' The trainers pro not generally in love with this stylo of obstacle. Certainly it does not appear ns if it will do for tho horses to lap them very hard.
