Applications received for the positions of pdwer-house superintendent and works engineer, and of business manager in connection with the tramways aud electric lighting schemes, were considered/ at Wednesday night's mooting of the Nrfpier Borough Council. Ultimately Mr. A. Hewitt (who has had charge of the erection of the engines for the contractors, Messrs. Turnbull and Jones) was appointed superintendent at a salary of itUOO a year, and Mr. J. W. Callaghan (of the Wellington tramways) business manager at .£260 a year. The Napier Retailers' Association has ndopted a "credit control system," which when finally arranged, will bo put into operation by members. It is claimed that bad debts will be greatly reduced thereby. WOODVILLE. At the annual'meeting of the Woodville Brass Band the balance-sheet showed a credit balance of <£10, and assets valued at over .£2OO, which was considered satisfactory. The election of officers resulted in Mr. James being appointed bandmaster, Mr. Pickford sergeant, Mr. Burley corporal, Mr. H. Fletcher secretary, and Mr. M. Pickering treasurer. Messrs. Fennel! and Giles were re-elected .auditors. Mr. W. H. Nelson was re-elected president, The usual votes of thanks were accorded to the retiring office-bearers. It was decided to present Mr. L. Nicholas with a framed testimonial for his long service as a bandsman. i A painful accident, happened on tho racecourse on Tuesday morning to a youth named T. Bell, who works in Mr. Sullivan's training stables. Ho was schooling a horso over some jumps, and the horse struck one of the obstacles, and unseated Bell. The lad hung on to the horse's neck for a time, but had to let go, and tho horse trod on him, making a nasty wound in the abdomen. Dr. Mules had to stitch the wound up, and at latest reports the boy is making an excellent recovery. At the Alexander Hall on Tuesday night the social and presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Burnett took place. The' Mayor (Mr. .T. Grant) presented the guests of the evening, on behalf of those present, with a handsome silver tea-kettle. Mr.Burnett has been in Woodville for 28 years, '25 of which lie has been on the Borough Council, for a considerable part of that time as Mayor, and tho .presentation is to show appreciation of his services on the occasion of his retirement. During the evening a programme of musical items was gone through. PAHIATUA. The subscribers to the Pali in tun. Telephone- Exchange are now entitled to a iflidnight service. The country people, however, desire the exchange to be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., tho same hours as are kept at. Eketalrnna. In order to secure this arrangement, a requisition to the Department must be signed by a majority of the subscribers. Tho requisition lias been drawn up by the Progressive Association, and is now awaiting signatures. The accumulated funds of the local Foresters' Lodge, as reported at the-meet-ing of the lodge on Tuesday, have now reached close on i-1000, of, which there is a. sum of X'3ooo out on mortgage. Officers were elected for the ensuing term as follow :~C.R., Bro. W. Yewen; S.C.E., Bro. T. Polsrlnse; S.W., Bro. W. Heslop; J.W., Bro. C. Howen; 5.8., Bro. W. Amey. The various other officers were all reelected 1 . •
The Rev, Cecil Smith, late of Otnki, has been appointed by the Bishop of Wellington to take temporary charge of the local Anglican parish. MASTERTON. Settlers in the' districts surrounding Masterton have been carrying water during the last fe\v .weeks,..their tanks having run dry... This'.is;-'the first occasion in the history "of tfie* Wairarapa, it is stmted, that it has been necessary to carry water in the middle of winter. Sixteen patients-have been admitted to the Buchanan Home since it was opened, and of this dumber nine have died. At the present time there are five inmates in the home.
