(By Telegraph—Press Association.) « PRISONER WALKS OFF. Auckland, July 10. A young prisoner, named Joseph .Thomas Christie, escaped from Ht. Edeu Gaol this afternoon. Ho was engaged with, other prisoners outside the gaol, when suddenly ho walked away. A warder, who interrogated ,him, was told that lie was carrying a message lo another warder. Nearlv threo hours later he was seen coming out of tho bush a* short dis-' tanc.e from tho gaol by a warder who gavo chase, and, after a rough and tumble, captured him. THE BETSY ISLAND CASE. Invercargill, July 10. Judgment was given to-day by...Mr. Cruiekshank, S.M., in a ease of importance to Natives. Hansen, a European, was charged with trespassing on Betsy Island in pursuit of mutton birds. The defence was that ho only acted as cook for two Natives, who captured six thousand birds. Tho Magistrate said that :h'o was satisfied Hansen Itad engaged with tho others in the pursuit of birds, and that, to allow Natives to tako European servants to act as cooks and pluckors, was contrary to regulations, which wcro designed to prevent exploitation. Defendant was fined .£3. Notico of appeal was given. OUT OF WORK. Napier, July 10. Referring to tho subject of unemployment, tho Mayor, at last night's council meeting, emphasised that there was no room nero for outsiders. Eivo or six strangers were arriving every day, but tho authorities could not provide work for all local residents. About sixty men would be put off the tram work monthly, and tho position then would bo much worse. SUSPECTED OF BURGLARY. Christchurch, July 10. After' some adjournments, the tearing of tho several charges of breaking and ontering and theft preferred against Arthur Thomas Reid and Walter Medley ilulston, wero proceeded with this morning. Accused reserved their.defenco and were committed for trial. FIRE AT ELTHAM. Eltham, July 10. A fire occurred last uiglit on premises occupied by Mr. P. A. Wright, tailor. It originated in a. workroom, which was gutted, but the other portion of tho building was saved.
