GELIGNITE UNDER BARRACKS,. (By Telegraph-Prces Association.) Christchurch, July 10. I A startling story of an attempt to dynamite the Edward Barracks was reported'last night. The story indicated that somo malevolent person, or persons, had planned to destroy a. portion of tho buildings attached to the barracks iu Cashel Street. Tho attempt appeared, on. investigation, to have blocn tho work of amateurs, but had it succeeded it is diflioult to say what damage might liavo been wrought, not only to the portion of the drillslied selected, but to the Toadway and houses in tine immediate vicinity. The facts are as follow:—About 10.U0) o'clock last night L. Campbell was walking along Cashel Street, 011 his way home with his wife. When passing tho orderly' rooms, near Montreal Sh-eot, lie was somewhat astonished at noticing a light under one of tho wooden buildings. Ho suspected that an attempt was being mado lo set fire to the building, and at onco investigated. On looking under the building, which stands al>out eighteen inches clear of the level of tho footpath, and on stono piles, ho found a. candle burning inside a biscuit tin. Ho was considerably startled when 110 found that attached to tho candle was a fairly long length of fuse, to tho other end of which were secured three plugs of gelignite, enclosed in a length of bicycle tubing, which formed a rude cartridge. Mr. Campbell promptly disconnected the fuse, and waited at the spot while his wife went round to tho polico station iu Hereford Street. Sergeant Clarkson at once went to tho scene, and took charge of the gelipnite, together with the fuse, oandle, and biscuit-,, tin. The police are lvticent.
