Newman, M.P. Ho asked tho Minister for Defenco whether he would inquire fully as to the suitability of Picton Harbour for tlio purpose. Tho Hon, James A lien said that no doubt tho hvdrographical conditions 0/ Picton rendered it a suitablo harbour for tho sheltering of ships, naval and merchant, but there wore mauy more important considerations to be taken into account in tho selection of a naval base for tho Dominion. In selecting a naval base for New Zealand, tho Admiralty would be consulted.
