ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SWEPT OVERBOARD. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Invercargill, July 9. A trimmer on the steamer Waitomo named — Napier, aged about 10, whoso relatives resido at Dunedin, was washed overlxmrd on Saturday at 2 a.m., when tho vessel was two days out from Sydney. It was pitch dark and a tremendous sea was running, -so nothing could' bo done to savo him. DETERMINED ACT. . , Christcfiurch, July 9. A case of determined suicide was reported' to the police to-day from • tho monumental worKs yard at tho corner of Hereford and Madras Streets. In response to a telephone messago, a constable went to tho yaid. and found tho body of a man in a sitting position, with his throat cut. A razor was lying alongside. From letters found on the body, deceased was identified as Joseph Smart. Tho letters indicated that deceased had evidently contemplated snicido. Smart was an elderly man about CO years of age. He was well known in Lyttelton, whero ho was employed by tho Railway Department as a casual labourer on the wharves. At tho inquest a verdict was returned that deooasod committed suicido while temporarily of unsound mind. LADY SEVERELY INJURED. Wanqanui, July 9. A voung woman named — Sutherland, resitting at Urquhart Street, was severely injured this evening as tho result of a collision between her bicycle and a motorcar. She sustained concussion of tho brain, a broken nose, and. probably tho loss of tho sight of one eye.
