UNEMPLOYMENT.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCILLOR'S VIEWS

Unemployment is a serious matter in Christchurch. just now, according to tho Hon. J. Baxr.

Speaking in the Legislative Council yesterday, Mr. Barr said that there were a largo number of men out of work in Christchurdi. He calculated that 50 per cent, of the stonemasons there were unemployed, also a third of . tho bricklayers, and a fair percentage of tho carpenters and the plasterers. The work outlook in tho southern city was bad. Unions should be encouraged- to devise schemes of insurance against unemployment. say, contributory schemes, which might be subsidised by the State. Sneaking subsequently, tho Hon. J. Duthio sadd that plasterers had been tyrants for several years. Every builder had been harassed through the shortago of them and through their exorbitant demands. Any unemployment now was probably a result of that.
