The Hon. W. F. Massey (Prime Minister), who sprained his ankle slightly on Tuesday, was absent from his office nnd frcm tho House of Representatives all day yesterday. If his physician permits, ho will probably be in his place in the House to-day. _ Tho Hon. W. Fraser (Minister for Public Works) will leave to-day for Huntly with tho member for Raglan (Mr. R. F. Bollard), to inspect the approaches to the railway bridge ovor the Waikato River near Huntly, about which .there is some difference of opinion between the Public Works Department and the Town Board. The late Mr. Barnard, whoso death at the ripe age of 80 took place yesterday morning, arrived in Now Zealand nearly sixty years ago. Like most of the early settlers, he could recount many stirring episodes and experiences of the* old days. He was a familiar figure at Newtown, and was, in fact, one of the first five residents to settle in that suburb. He leaves a widow, one son, who is superintendent of tho Palmerstott Fire Brigade, and four daughters—Mrs. G. *W. Barltrop, Mrs. (J. Gell, Mrs. F. Jenkins, and one unmarried daughter. ■ Mr. Halligan, stock inspector stationed at Wellington, returned from Sydney by the Manuka yesterday. Captain M'Artliur Onslow, of the Defence Department, ChristclruTch, returned by tho Manuka from Sydney yesterdny. The death occurred at New Plymouth on Monday of Mrs. Morshead, wife of the late Mr. E. T. Morshead, who' was some years ago in the Portal Department at Wellington. Deceased leaves two daughters—Miss Morshead (New Plymouth) and Mrs. Percy Blundell (Wellington)—and two sons, Leslie Morshead (London) and Herbert Morshead (Aus- i tralia), besides seven, grandchildren.
