MYSTERIOUS CRIME.
A 'POSSUM HUNTER'S DEATH. By Teleffraijli—Press Aejooiatlon—Oojjyrisht Launceston, July 7. The Mathinna mysteTy, which concerns the niysterious disappearance of a farmer named Mullins, who had gone out 'possum hunting and had: nover returned, baffles the police, but there is no doubt that it is a case of murder. Mullins was a fairly well-to-do fanner. Bad feeling lias existed in the district for years past among certain parties, politics being an element therein. When it was suggested to Mullins that he should carry a revolver owing to certain events that had, occurred, ho laughingly replied that if he got into trouble ho would depend on his fists. / • .
Searchers discovered the debris of a huge fire in a depression on a hillside, containing hitman bones, teeth, a staple used for straps, and a quantity of melted lead. Mullins was' wearing heavy boots, with iron-capped . heels, and a belt. No traoe of these was' found.' The footprints of a large and small boot were discovered, also impressions of horses' hoofs, The. theory is that Mullins, when examining opossum traps, was shot by a person lying in wait, and the body thrown across a horse and carried two miles to tho spot where the pyre had been pupated.
