GIFT AIR MACHINE.
OPINION OP HON. JAMES 'ALLEN*
Until the gift aeroplane which tho New! Zealand forces are to_ receive arrives here nothing very much is being done to ar« rango for Its being used. It has not left England yet. . Tho Minister for Dofenoo (tho Hon. J. Allon) stated yesterday that ho did not know how far wo should bo ablo to fulfil requirements hero. Ho had made a good many inquiries concerning aviation, at Ilomo "and had satisfied himself that to operate a machine required a good deal of expert knowledge. To attempt to operj ate one without this knowledge might in., volvo tho sacrifico of a life, to say no-, thing of tho loss of the machine. la. view of this it was probable that tho coming of tho machino would involve us in soino moro expense, because wo should liuvo to appoint another officer unless wo had somo one hero to tako charge of it. He added that at Farnborough men were not allowed to go up in a flying machine until they had. studied air currents by going up in a looso balloon.
