NOTHING TO BEAT COLLEGE. Unthoilght-of Happenings. Surprises—two of them—were handed, out as a result of the games last Saturday. The brilliant battle of the Karori eleven on the previous playing day when tiiey passed out defeat to tho unbeaten University team was expected to bo a prologue for better things by the Blacks, but in only drawing with Wellington 011 Saturday last tho calculations have gone wrong. And Metropolitan, tho "bluclc horso of tho competitions, in taking a beating by tho Insurance men, have also dropped several points in tho opinion of those who held out hopes for the team J.n the second lap of tho games. University's Safe Position. Collego, it seems, havo now only to Bit tight 011 their lead lor the premiership. In tiio previous Saturday's game, by Buffering their first defeat by Karori, College woro brought down into closer touch on tho ladder of points to Metropolitan, and with tho improvement noticeablo each Saturday by tho lied and Blacks, tno opinion was held that the College would probably lind this team up. witlL them in tho finishing distance for victory. but now the little-fancied but underrated Insurance team litis como along, and last Saturday they were good enouun to koep ahead in thoir clash with the Red and Blacks. This seems to preclude tho latter team's, possibilities of being in a final flutter for the premiership with College, and tho Greens can now be fairly safely written down as this year's ohampions. Karori Want Wider Goal-posts. If Karori had focused their 6hota to the scoring area set down in the rules and regulations governing the game of hockey, they would nave taken victory away with them on Saturday. As it was, Wellington—and it was a weak Wellington on the day—were lucky to see the Black 6hots go over the posts and round the posts bo frequently tnat a man with paper and pencil would havo had his work out out 111 taking a tally of tho attempt®. Their only goal—by Murphy—however, was a good one. A Word to the Growlers. Keferee M'Konzi© liad something above the average to oonteud against in the matter of appeals in the Karori-Wclling-ton game 011 Saturday—unnecessary protests coming from the touchline as well us from the field of play. It would perhaps be as well for those spectators ignorant of the powers of the referees to learn that tho official with the w'histlo will always be. listened to when recommending a remedy for this unseemly oonduot-ana Borne of the remedies are drastic. The Students Continue thoir Frolics. The "capping" frolics of tho Victoria College students were, it would seom, carried right into, and through, Saturday aftornoon, when eleven of them, in gTeen jerseys and armed with hockey sticks, galloped over Karori Park, turning their attention this time.'upon a wire : netting receptacle in tho immediate rear of tho United liockey .team. _ _ " And right good use did they make of it. for, beforo tho gamq was over, they had' landed tho ball into it no fewer than nine times. Still inoro goals would havo been registered had not, ou at least two occasions, G. Strack, when in splendid scoring positions, lapsed suddenly into golf. Ho has quite a penchant for sending the ball skywards, and if once especially it had gono a few feet nearer earth, United's goalkeeper would havo had to display extraordinary ability to escape a very sudden indisposition. En passant, it might ju6t be mentioned that on tho day's play, United's goalkeeper did display a quite uncommon ability to get out of the way of the ball— lionce the College score! In tho scoring division, tire Strack brothers and Cleghorn fairly excelled themselves.
Boyd, United's "Star." For the United men, Boyd struggled strenuously to stem tho tide, but ho found —even as King Canute before liiin found— tho "tide" would not be stemmed. Andrews seized upon one of tho few opportunities given to United of ecoring, and sent in a fine goal. The team, however, showed little or no combination throughout. Junior Championship. The following are tho positions at tho ond of tho first round in the junior championship:— ( • ,9. -K rL . The Ladies: What of Them? Last Saturday's games were very tame displays, but tiie poorness of form shown was made up for by tho close scoring in a couple of instances. ' College Old Girls put up a good defence against Sirens, and with a little luck would havo made a drawn game of it. Sirens made several alterations to their team; but this apparently did nothing to strengthen tho team, 'i'heir speedy riglit-wing, Miss Al'Uonnell, was moved to the inside-left position, and was unable to keep her place. College Old Girls put up their best display to date, but their work was spoilt-by-tho lack of finish -when in the circle. Tho bully, Miss Cathie, was always worrying the Siren back 6, but tho want of support lost many openings made by this player. lUuibler A had a fairly easy win over St Augustine's, who only musterod ten players. Tho latter team still havo their old fault of getting out of their places, and will havo to rectify this if they liopo to beat some of the teams higher up on the list. Tlioy nro a very willing lot of girls, and, with this fault remedied, would make a good team. Victoria College, weakened by 6ome of their players being oil vacation, just scrambled homo ahead of Rambler B. Iho latter team would do better to try passin" the ball across the field a little more, instead of hitting it straight into an opposing back's hands. Gregg s had their usual defeat, this timo at the hands of Girls' College. That Visit from N.S.W. The following from tho Sydney "Referee" of Juno 25 will bo of interest, in view of tho action of the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey . Association in inviting a Now South Wales team to visit the Dominion:— The luter-Stato matchoa under tho auspices of tho All Australia Women's Association will bo played in Melbourne on July 5, 7, and 8, when South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and New South Wales will be represented. Tho following have been selected to represent the Mother State:—Backs, Misses 1). Forsyth (Valkyrie), B. Walsh (Valkyrio), i\l. Perry (Wandali); halves, J. M'Murtrie (Cooevauna), I'. Clubbe (Wandali), T. Lloyd (University); forwards, S. Wallack (Cooevannn), Mrs. Fitzhardingo (Wandali), Misses E. Hamilton (Valkyrie), W. West (Wandali), Captain JO. Holloway (Culwulla). Reserves: Misses Lyall, Kent, and Lowers. Eight of last year's representatives havo kept their places in the team, whilst Alisses Lowers and West played in 1910 and Miss Clublo two years ago. Miss West, who is captaining tho team, and Miss Clubbe havo lately returned from England, and whilo thero learned a great deal about tho Old Country's stylo and methods of play. The standard of play as regards ladies' hockey is undoubtedly better in Now South Wales than iu tho other States, though in comparison to England tho game here is still in its infancy. In New Zealand tho game has a much bigger hold I han it has here, ami a combined New Zealand team would prove too strong a combination for New South Wales also. But it must be remembered that the game is only played for four months in tho year here, whereas tho senson extends over six or seven months in tho Dominion. However, if a team were lo visit New Zealand and matches played against tho various sub-associations affiliated to tho Now Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association, the Sydney ladies should rivo a good account of thomsolvos"
