ELECTION OF HONORARY • TREASURER. Palmerston North, July 2nd, ISM. Dear Sir,—At tho request of a majority of tho Committee of the A. and P. Assooiation, I beg to offer myself as a candidate for tho office of Hon. Treasurer of the Association for tho ensuing year. As you will, doubtless, have noticed my nomination was s'gned by seventeen, members of the Committee. Of the 40 members of the Committee 82 have promised me their support, and have urged the advisableness of my offering my services for the office. In view of the .strong representations made, I deem it to bo my duty to accede to the wishes of those gentlemen who have approached me, and, consequently, solicit the favour of your support at the forthcoming election. While I recognise that the gentleman who has held the office for. a number of years has rendered valuable services to the Assooiation, yet I would respectfully urge that a time comea in the existenoe of all institutions when a ohange would not necessarily be to its disadvantage; but, on the contrary, would result in the introduc. tion of newer ideas making for progress and. advancement. And I feel confident that in the event of my being elected to the office of Hon. Treasurer I could bo of service in this direction. 9 . Though I have not had the honour of holding office iji this Association, I have, during my many years' residence in Palmerston, taken a keen interest in its welfare and progress; and while it has not been my privilege to take an active part in its internal management, movements for the advancement of the "Association have always had my sympathy and support. I respectfully submit that my Wngthy experience as a business man gives me tho requisite knowledge of financial matters, and I am confident, if elected to the position, my qualifications in this respect would justify my appointment. I maintain that any member of tho Association is justified in offering his services for any office, whether it has been held for a lengthy period or not by any one gentleman. Lengthy service surely is not a valid reason why anyone other than the person who has held the position should bo debarred from seeking election to an office. If this were admitted as a principle it is conceivable that it would endangor the welfare of an institution thus affected. In conclusion, I desire to point out that I am contesting the position at the request of a large section' of the Committee, who have assured me of their support, and these influential gentlemen would not have requested me to offer my services if my election were likely, to endanger the welfare of tho Association! on tho contrary, they must be confident that my election would be beneficial. Under these circumstances I respeotfully solicit your assistance and vote at the forthcoming election. I remain, Dear Sir, Yours faithfully, A. E. BENNETT.
