REFORM CANDIDATE AT REEFI'ON, (B:r lVsleffrapliz-Hpcclai OorrcsDonSent.) Roefton, July 4. Thcro waa a crowded house at Mr, Michel's Eeefton meeting, in spite of tho weather. Tho chairman (Mr. Scantlebury) said that Mr. Michel was tho bestknown man in tho contest, and had filled rnoro public positions than any man on tho Coast. Mr. Michel spoke in the highest terms of the integrity and ability of the present Ministry. Ho stated that they were letting the daylight in on tho Dominion finances. Ho also cuiogised them for tho Public Service Bill, which throw away political "pull" and patronage, and freed members so that they might attend to public duties, instead of being, as in tho past, "a walking registry office." Ho advocated assistance to mining by tho orcction of small Government batteries and higher payment to prospectors. Ho severely criticised the Liberal Government for bad land tenure on tho Coast, which was retarding settlement, and promised to give (if elccted) the fullest assistance in developing the great gold, coal, timber, and land potentialities of Eeefton. A largo number of questions were asked and answered in a manner showing that Mr. Michel had a good grip of tho great leading questions of the day. The speaker was applauded frequently, aud, after a voto of thanks, tho meeting concluded, Strong Eeefton committees havo been formed, with Mr. lly. Lockington as chairman of the men's committee, and Mrs. Hickton as chairwoman of tho ladies' committee, with Mr. E. Nicolson secretary. Mr. Michel is winning ground every day by his platform ability and character. In addition to this, tho organisation of his people throughout tho electorate is very complete, and tho opinion is growing daily that his success is assured.
RATHER FLAT MEETING, (By Tcloffrapli.—Siiocinl Correspondent.) , Hokitika, July i, Tlio Opposition cniulidalo (Mr. 51, Hannan) delivered liis policy speech it\ the Opera House at Greyniouth beforo a largo audience. In tlio courso of liis speech lio admit ted that tlio Liberal party, wero at present dismembered, and their defeat had been brought about by internal dissension, but lie felt euro that they would again come back to their own. Tlio speech occupied ■ only iifty-oight minutes, of which fully twenty minutes were occupied in rending Hansard extracts and quoting his opponents' speeches. A number of questions wero asked and answered, the candidate stoutly refusing to accept written questions, stipulating that only oral questions would bo answered, Mr. li. C. Forsyth moved a hearty voto of tlinnks to Sir. Ilannan, and also that the meeting consider him u fit mid proper person to represent the electors of Greyllioutll. Mr, Cain seconded tho motion, ■ Singularly enough, tho Mayor of Greymouth, who presided, only put tlio motion as one of thanks, and it was carried unanimously, amidst applause. Tho mealing 'never bore the semblunco of being enthusiastic, and tho candidate did not speak with any convincing power, delivering his speech from voluminous notes and remaining standing closo (o tho chairman's table during the whole proceedings, and the meeting was all over by halfpast nine, and oven soinoof Mr. Hannan's own supporters rccogniso that his candidature has gained littlo after tho delivery of liis policy speech.
