NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) :■> Gisborne, July 3. Something like summer weather was experienced the races at.Gisborne today, and a record crowd turned out. Mummer won a doublo in good style, and his owner was unlucky not to win a third race with Douzel, who stopped at the brush fence when holding a big lead. With the exception of a couple of logfences, the country was not difficult. Princo Eddie did a good gallop, at Napier on Saturday, and, in consequence, he started a good favourite in the Hurdles, with Scorch (who did not look ready) and Cally Bridge (who stripped in perfect condition) next in demand. Tlio field was bunched for half a mile, but then Cally Bridge jumped himself to the front. At the seven furlongs, however, he gave way to Prince Eddie, and the pair then put a big break on the field. Entering the straight, Cally Bridge again took charge, and, jumping the last fence better than Princo Eddie, he went on, and won by three lengths. Scorch, Ambergris, and Forward finished in a line ten lengths away. , Eajah fell at the last fence.

Twenty horses weighed out for tho Maiden Eace, the defections being Patti, Kentora, Florette, aiul Muscadine. It was anticipated that, with such a big field, there would be a lot of bother at the barrier," but Mr. Wood (the starter) refse to the occasion, and dispatched his field well. As they made the turn for home, Shona May and Multiplicity wero in a line just clear of Soultie and Chortle. The first-named had the issue in safe keeping' at the distance, where Soultio got up on the inside, and cannoned into Chortle, squeezing Multiplicity back. The Tre.ijJmill filly won by a couple of lengths, with Soultie and Chortle in a line. Leadlight got rid of its rider before tho start, and took no part in the race. Chortle was favourite, and Shona May second favourite.'

There was a • great duel for machino supremacy between Mummer and Our Queen in the Flying Handicap, but, at the final ring, the former had a lead of thirty pounds. Morton was first out, but Our Queen (on the fence) soon ran to the front, with Auldearn and Merton handy, led to the entrance. Then Mummer, who had got a bad run, came up on »the outside, and Theodore raced through on to the rails. The latter had a length advantage at the distance, but lie tired to nothing, and Mummer, finishing well, won by three lengths. Merton was a neck behind Theodore, and tho others were close up. Merton was put up for auction after the race, with a reserve of 150 guineas, but no offer was forthcoming. The big Steeplechase was the same weird affair that the whole of the jumping events have been this season. Haittere was a verv warm favourite, but he failed tn negotiate the courso without mishap. Lugeon, Webfoot, and Napper Tandv were withdrawn at the start. Donzel led for half a mile and then Sunrav took charge, but at the locs lie stood off too far. landed on the wrong side, and broke his neck. Donzel then led past (lie stand, and the double here brought disoster to the remainder of the runners. At the first fenco Game tried to run off and fell heavily, liebel' and Reservoir refused, and lied M'Gregor fell over lieservoir, but was quickly remounted by O'Connell and gave chase to Donzel. So, too, did Hautcre, who fell at the sod wall, but was remounted without irons by D. Cameron, who was standing by, and .subsequently completed the course. Donzel ran off ot tho back, and lied M'Gregor took charge, but Donzel was got going again, and chased him home. At the turn an interesting finish was promising, but Eed M'Gregor had too much pace, mid won easily. Hautcre and liebel had a set-to for third place, ond tho top weight scored. On weigliinjr-in D. Cameron was 10lb. over, but this is provided for in tho rules. Cameron's nerformance was a good one, tor he had to ride over two miles in ordinary clot lies and no irons.

The conditions did not stipulate for a penalty for Mummer in (lie Hack K:\eo so, despite the bic field, the Gazetev gelding wc\s again a hot. favourite. At the barrier he drew an insido position, and. in tlie jump-atrny, lie cot out well, but Kielder headed liiin oil", and led to the turn where the favourite mil lip. and soon put the issue beyond doubt. Tatinii and Gazette then came i'asl, but Ihe favourite won easily. Gazette was a length cltsr of Kielder, and then canio Talimi and Faith. The last-named sot a very bad run, but finished on well. ,Tlm Hack §tteul«s was a better race, and

of the twelve runners, ton completed the course, Napper Tandy and AVolit'aot monopolised backers' attentions, and the former won after a great liuisli with Stroller, while that good jumper Lugcon, was third, 'and Wirral next. The latter ran ill) to Napper Tandy three furlongs from home, but on' landing over (lie logs, lie broke down badly. Tho winner wos always in a good position, and won by a neck, but, had tho saddle not slipped back on Stroller, lie might have reversed positions with the winner. Hoy Boy and Eiya fell. Tho concluding event was a splendid race. Tragedy King wns favourite, but .Multiply beat him ot the finish after a good.race with Montiform and Koosevelt. The latter pulled very hard over the first part,' and his rider struggled witli him and got him back. He then finished very fast. Tragedy King took charge nt tho turn, but Multiply came with a wet sail and l won nicely. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. I*-/ him.-»vewi Aja.icia.tion.) Gisborne, July 3.
