THE SMALLPOX SCARE,
RIGID MEASURES. SITUATION WELL IN HAND. By Tclecraph—Pices Association—Copyright Sydney, July 3. Ml'. Holman, (he Premier, states that the Board of Health is taking the most rigid precautions to prevent the spread of smallpox. The authorities at present consider they liave the situation well in hand. Free public vnceinafion is being provided. All cases except two have been traced to the clothing factory. The latter, situated within the city bounds, near Redfern, has been closed and disinfected. WHOLESALE VACCINATION. (Rec. July 3, !).50 p.m.) Sydney, July 3. The difficulty in handling tlic smallpox outbreak is that some of the patients are residing in the suburbs all round tho city, and some are in Parramatta. A second factory in Cleveland Street has been declared infected, and closed. Three fresh cases were discovered, and duly quarantined to-day, all being of the mild form. The Health Authorities emphasised the urgent necessity of wholesale vaccination, to ensure the stamping out of tlio disease, which has broken out amongst largo numbers of people. Acting 'on advice, the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand has notified all passengers leaving by the company's steamers, from to-day, that they must lie vaccinated. ' WARNING TO TRIPPERS. (Rec. July 4, 0,20 a.m.) Sydney, July 3. The Union Company specially warns intending passengers to New Zealand that they must be vaccinated. Other shipping companies are adopting similar precautionary measures.' Including "contacts," there are now: 32 persons, in quarantine at Bunbury. AUCKLAND PRECAUTIONS. INSPECTION OP STEAMERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, July 3. On inquiry at the district .health office this morning, a reporter was informed that, in view of tlio declaration of a mild outbreak of smallpox in Sydney, the usual precautions would be taken in Auckland with regard to the inspection of- passengers, etc. Every i>erson arriving direct from Sydney would be required to give particulars concerning the place of his departure and intended destination. Passengers would bo submitted to a thorough medical test before leaving tho vessel, and, if any wore not vaccinated, they you Id bo required to submit themselves to_ that precaution. In the event of compliance tliey .would be allowed to go ashore, but otherwise they would be quarantined for tho usual period. The process of medical inspection, prior to granting of pratique to vessels inward bound from Sydney,- will bo more involved than usual until such time as the New South WaJos capital is declared to be a, "clean, port." The first vessel to be affected will be R.M.S. IkWra, which is duo at 8 a.m. to-morrow from Sydney on route to Vancouver. CAN THE MAORIS PLAY? THE CHANCES OP VACCINATION. Auckland, July 3. It is quite probable that a match between the,. Maori touring team and the Auckland' representatives, arranged for to-morrow, will have to be cancclled. The touring team is due at Auckland from Sydney by the Makura to-morrow, and, as aill_ passengers will have to bo vaccinated owing to the prevalence of smallpox in Sydney, it is considered likely that Mr. Parata, manager of tho teani, will call the game "off." Nothing definito is known at the present time, but club secretaries liavo been advised that senior championship fixtures may be gone on with.
