NOTES AND COMMENTS.

IBT GLE.ncok.l Tlie Gisborne meeting which is to, open to-day looks like being the most successful winter fixture yet held by that club. As far as can be gathered tlie whole of the foreign horses, with the exception of Diavolo and Composed, have been taken to the meeting, and the Auckland district in particular is strongly represented. In the Hurdles, Prince Eddie, and Cally Bridge may divide favouritism,.byti as tho latter is prone to break blood vessels the big horse should bo his master if ho is able to get him at top andkeep him at it for a couple of furlongs. No fewer than 21 maiden performers arc engaged in the second race-arid as the distance is only four furlongs it will l)o anybody's race, with luck at the barrier plaving an important part in tho decision. &hona May (Treadmil —Edna May) is the best bred animal in Ihe roce, but there are some speedy horses in it, notably Soultie (Soult—Morie) in G. Jones's stable, and Golden Grain by Gluten, in E. ,T. Rae's stables. The lastnamed has a great reputation at Ellers-lie,-.'but so far has not run up ■to it. Multiply will probably be reserved for the Winter Oats leaving Our Queen to represent'the Parker stables in the Plying Handicap. The mare named is to be Deeley's mount «'hd on this account will be well supported. Acliroy has broken down and has been scratched for all engagements. J. Buchanan will' ride Montiform, F. D. Jones Mummer, and W. Ryan Merton. , It the reports as to the bad luck Hautere had in the Great Northern Steeples are correct—and! there is lib reaion • to doubt their authenticity—J. Williamson's horse must be regarded as possessing a great chance in' the big steeples at Gisborno to-day. He is to be ridden by I'. Brady and the class opposed to him cmnot be described as even moderate. Webfoot may he reserved for the Tramway Steeples ot Gisborne to-day, for in that event, which is open to hacks onlv. he had only 51b. more to carry than he has in the open steeples. His owner' will probably also think twice before he takes on Hantere. Webfoot wiil be ridden by W. J. Porter.' Faith is engaged in both tho Firing and' Hack Handicaps at Gisborne to-day but it is said that the Multifid mare will start in .'the latter racp only aijd will be ridden by B. Deeley. Fort William, the top weight in the Winter Oats at Gisborne to-daj ; has been more or less unsound sinco the Ellerslie meeting and may be left in. his 'box. This bsing so, Multiply will have Deeley. in the saddle. C. Brown will ride Tragedy King, J. Buchanan Montiform, S. Reid Lorh Mnben and C. Monk Roosevelt. Judging by the inquiries for Mummer and Tragedy King yesterday the latter may •start favourite. Aucklandcrs in "ar-' ticular are very confident about the lull brnther to Master Theory. While schooling horses at Gisborne on Tuesday last J. Brady fell off Ladv .Tean and broke his collarbone, and the Auckland amateur rider A. Mitchell received a fracture at the base of-the skull, and also a broken jaw, ;is the re.sult of a bad fall off Mapuna. The latter rider is in the hospital 'and his condition is serious. ' ' FIXTURES. July 3 and I—Gisborne R.C. Stefplecliase. July 12—North Canterbury and Oxford ' J.C.'s Sports. July 16 and 19—Wellington R.C. Winter. August 12, 11, and 16—C.J.C. Grand National.
