Timaru, July 2. : ,The strike of .the l'cderationist .\\'qterisl<iars.ljras declared off .on Sahirdiiy.-whoij.-•a new, union was formed,' and some of the strikers .joined it. Others have now ap:plied to join, and havo sent 111 their fees to the secretary. •. The new. union,.. however, took legal advice, and is now rehirning the. applications and foes. The rales includo one ;to the effect, that, members of the union are to be men employed about the wharves or on ships moored in tlio harbour, and counsel advises that, as the .applicants are not employed—have indeed .refused to accept snqh work—they are not eligible for membership of the new union. NEEDS OF WAIROA. Wafroa, July 2. The Chambsr of Commerce pasted resolutions in favour of reserving the bush at Wa'ikaremoana for scenic purposes, also opening up the road to Euatahuna. .The chamber also supports efforts beiiig made to get the Napier-Gisborne section of the East Coast railway completed as soon as possible, and will send a deputation to the Minister. The Napier Chamber of Commerce is to be asked to support the Government roading of back blocks, especially in' the Kuakituri district. .It was also decided to ask the PostmasterGeneral to get letters .sent by private liiotor-cars running daily or else establish a tri-weeldy mail. The Minister for Lands is to be asked to move in the matter of closer settlement, in view of the early .completion of the new harbour. HISTORIC COMMEMORATION. Napier, July 2. Fifty years ago to-day the Onmranui engagement, which practically saved Napier, from attack duriug the Maori war, tcokj place, and a handful of survivors assembled on the historic ground to celebrate the occasion. The roll was called, the ;"Last Post" sounded, and a short address was given by the Hon. J. Ormond. The | party then returned to town and participated in dinner. ' j ' Gisborne, July' 2. DWELLINGHOUSE DESTROYED. Nelson, July 2. A dwelling at Murchison, owned and occupied by Mr. AV. Hunt, was destroyed by fire early this morning, together with most of the contents. The owner had a policy for >,£175 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe office. THE ORE ORE TRAGEDY. Wanpanui, July 2.
