ORPHANS' CONCERT.

1 9 SENIOR CADET BAND FUNDS. The weather of last evening militated against a large attendance at the concert given by the Club in aid of funds for the establishment of a drum and fife band in connection withi the Wellington Senior Cadets. The audienco was a distinguished one; among those present being his Excellency tho Governor and Countess of Liverpool, the Hon. James Allen, Col. and Mrs. Heard, Col. Chaytor, 0.C.D., tho Mayor and Mrs. Luke, Coadjutor-Archbishop O'Shea, and Col. R. J. Collins. The chief function of the evening was the presentation of prizes to tho Senior Cadets who won trophies at the recent Easter Carnival. Tho names of the win--ncrs were called by Colonel. Heard, and, tho trophies were presented by his Excellency tho Governor. The prize-winners were as follow. Championship cups, Wellington Collego and No. 31 Company; semaphore signalling. Post and Telegraph Company; physical drill, No. 31 Company; squad drill. Wellington College, rifie < No. 31 Company; route marching, ' Wellington College; championship team medals, Col-our-Sergeant Petre, Cadets Jeromsou, M'LangMiii, Thomson, F. Pet-re, Parkin, Phillips, Griffiths, Aston, Baker, Scott, Plant, Sinclair; bugling, Bugler Dawe (No. 31 Company); Canadian medals, Cadets Petre and Porritt. At the conclusion of the presentation of the prizes tho Mayor called for threw cheers for his Excellency the Governor; which weja rousingly given. ." The concert programme was miscellaneous in character, ranging from tho music of Schubert and Sarasate to a display of the Japanese art of jiu-jitsu-and was therefore sufficiently comprehensive to pleaso all tastes. Mr. AV. Goudie (baritone) sang Frances , Allitzen's song, "Youth," . and "The Perfect Dav." Mr. Herbert Bloy, the talented violinist, whose playing is always refined and artistically appealing, played Schubert's ever-beautiful "Ave Maria," Dvorak's "Humoresque," and the quaint, crisp "Yapateado" of Sarasate, all to tho delight of the audience. Mr. J. 1\ Carr sang "Colleen Rue," and • with Mr; C. Hickmott the duet "The Veteran's Toast."' Mozart, in a merry mood,, was inter-, preted.by Mr. A.' Boeufve,' ■ in the song, "L'Epporello," a lively . old-world s»ng.' Mr. Borneo Gardiner, who contributed "The Mocking Bird".and "II Bacio" in finished style, was most enjoyable, and the big squad of cadets' whistled thejr teeth out in admiration of the sweet whistler; a double encore had to ]bo responded to before they wero satisfied. Mr.. Charles Hickmott sang "The Little Drummer of Gravelotte" in good style. An admirable display of rifle exercises and physical drill was given by the Champion Team, No. 31 Company Senior Cadets, ' who responded to the orders as one man.. It was a fine demonstration of the clock--like precision that can be attained in such work by hard practice. Tho girl pupils of Mr. J; A.- Duffy gavo a pleasing I display of physical drill, and a team 'of [ his male pupils gave a most interesting jiu-jitsu display, illustrating in a graphic manner how the garrotter and folk -of I that ilk may bo disposed of in unwished- ; for emergencies. An orchestra, under ! Mr. M'Loughlin played the melodious i overture to "The 'Bohemian Girl" (Balfe) at the opening number of the concert. ! During tho second part of the proj gramme his Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. I P. Luke) took the opportunity of thankI ihg his Excellency tor presenting the trophies.
