ESCAPE OF GAS.
"NEAR THING" AT ISLAND BAT. On Tuesday night, Mr. James W. son (in business as a butcher at Island Bay) and his wife both) had a very Earrow escape of death by asphyxiation. They retired to rest at the usual time, andiworonfound'. in-« bed.i yesterday morning ! quite unoonscious, '-their condition being due to an escape of .gas in tho passage outside their room. Tho discovery was made by their daughter, aged 15 years, who, not receiving any response to knocks at the bedroom door, gained admittance through a window from tho outsidej After opening the windows and door's sho 'called her uncle (Mr. fiobt. Anderson), who lives close by, and toe rendered* first aid until the arrival of Dr. Deamer. After doing whatever was possible, under the circumstances, the doctor had Mr. and Mrs. Dobson removed to the Hospital. The house occupied by Mr. Dobson* is fitted' with, an electric light service, but has a gas cooker in tho kitchen. Tho Hospital report is to the effect that' both patients, have now regained consciousness. From information received by the police, it appears that tho gas escaped from a defective meter, which was in the passage outside the bedroom. The passage was curtained off near the door leading to the bedroom, and this probably prevented the gas from going down the passage, and it consequently permeated under the door of the bedroom.
