BEAUTIFYING KELBURNE.

A PROGRESS REPORT. Tho Kelburne Beautifying Association met last night to consider the committee's report regarding tho class of tree most suitable for the. association's. purposes. Mr. A. W. Blair, who presided, stated that, after due consideration, tho red twig lime tree had been decided on as a tree possessing both beauty and suitability to the climate. Mr. Blair also ex- . plained that tho whole cost of planting would bo about ss. a tree. It was decided to adopt this tree for , planting. The chairman also brought forward tho result of tho committee's inquiries regarding the enclosure!) for-the trees. Ml'. Aitken explained a design of triangular shapes four feet high, and made of jnrrah timber, the cost of which, when tarred, would, he said, bo about 10s. or lis. for each -enclosure. Tho design was adopted. Discussing the. matter of finonce Mr. H. H. Gold, secretary, suggested that the help of tho Kelburne' ladies bo secured to canvass the district. He stated that he had marked off the suburb into districts, and had allotted one to each member .of th& committee. • The City Council wns prepared to commence, the work as soon as tho money was forthcoming, about i£9o being needed to complete the whole of the planting. The secretary had .£22 10s. in hood, and about .£7O or ,£BO had been promised. It was decided to leave the collection in the hands of the committee. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs. Foglia and Capp for the gift of a wire tree-guard, and to the Upland Estate Co. for the donation of JjlO towards the beautifying fund.

"In the report of tho Kelburne. School building scheme," writes Mr. John G. Swan, architect, "it was stated that certain designs submitted wero set nside on account of exceeding the cost. ■ With reference to my design, I am prepared to obtain teudors to carry out tho work within the limit of cost, or I would bo prepared to erect the buildings by daylabour and tako the risk of the cost exceeding the money limit as stated in the conditions."
