A meeting of tho Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was hold yesterday ovaning, Mr. E. H. Webb presiding. The following donations have, been received .since.lost meeting:—Mrs.. A. .At-, kins, £1 Is.; Ferguson and Osborne,Dresden Piano Co., Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers, and Mrs. Joseph Joseph, 10s. 6d. each; Mr. A. T. Bate and N.Z. Express Co., 10s. cach; Bishop Sprott, Messrs. G. and T. Young, P. W. Staples, J. Bolirke, Badham and Biss, Wright; Dixon, and Witt, WolleTman and Co., and "Friend," ss. each; Messrs. A. Dunn, W. C. Hampton, Kwei Chih, C. Mann, A. J. Petheiick, H. Sample, J. Geddis, E. L. Leask, S. Kadford, "Dcadbeat," and "Friend," 2s. 6d. each: Miss Gruar, Mr. S. G. N., 2s. each. Total, Tt lis. Gd. The society's inspector (Sfr., Seed) reported having visited Lower Hutt on Wednesday, June 25, where ho saw three calves, which ho judged were .in a starving Btate. Ho also recommended tho owner to oove.r -the calves at night. A later report was received to tho effect that the calves had died. Tho report dealt generally with various cases of alleged cruelty to horses, foiyls, and. dogs, and mentioned several prosecutions in which -tho sooiet.y had been successful. A case of alleged ill-treatment of fowls was referred to tho society's solicitors with a view to proceedings. "That's a most brutal case, remarked Inspector Soed in regard' to a case of a dog having been caught in a running noose at Joh-nsonville. Tho inspector liad gathered a littlo evidence of tho circumstances. which was to tho .effect that a noose had been placed in a hole, m a fence with the object of catching tho animal. Tho dog had been captured and had suffered intense pain.- The matter j is to bo inquired into.
