SYDNEY ROBBERIES.
ARMED FOOTPADS ON TRIAL. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright (Rec. July 1, 1.5 a.m.) Sydney, June 30. The two men named Cox and Lawrence have been committed for trial on charges of breaking and entering tho house of Captain Cox, on April 2-1, and stealing jewellery valued at .£300; also, on June ID, of assaulting and robbing Miss Cox of a ring valued at ,£IOO. In a statement made to the police by eaoh, and read, Cox indicated that he had adopted Lawrence's suggestion to commit iho robberies. Lawrence declared tliat Cox had told him to commit tho robberies from his father's house, in order to keep himself in money. They arranged tho two robberies together. Lawrence further stated that the sticking up of Leggatt was suggested by Cox, who demanded money from tho latter, and fired a revolver at him while Lawrouco held his horse. ' [On April 21- the' residence of Captain Cox, at Woollahra, was entered by burglars, and jewellery to the value of .£BO stolen On June 19 tho two Misses Cox were alone in the house, their brother Roy, aged sixteen, having just previously left tho house. A knock was heard at the door, which was opened, and a masked ■man presented a revolver at Miss Cox, and demanded the diamond ring sho was wearing. A lengthy 6trugglo took place, but eventually the intruder overcame tho sisters, and eaoh handed over lior ring. Earlier in the night a man named Leg- , gatt was driving on the Belmore Road when two masked men jumped out of concealment. Leggatt handed over ,£3O, and' then, jumping out of tho buggy, started to run. One of the highwaymen fired, wounding him in the arm. Bohi men then decamped.]
