THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS.
IBt GtiMcoi.l The near approach of the Wellington winter meeting is a forccable reminder that the season 1012-13 is drawing to a close. ' Tho hurdle. horseman, T. Pritchard, is 0 onco rnoro on the high road to health. Ho has gone for a trip to Rotorna. Jockey R. Hatch will shortly set up as a public trainer at Masterton. A loose of the stables formerly occupied by ,Alr. T. M'Grath has been secured by f him and the jockey named will ceaso f riding nfter the National meeting. 5 Tho appearance of the weights for tho J Wellington meeting saw Coronetted rosh--1 ed into the position of favourite for tho YViliter Hurdles, while his stable com- - panion, Awahou, has boon supported for i tho Parliamentary Handicap. r It appears as if the Hawko's Bay 1 trainer, 1\ Davis, will return with bis , team from Sydney at the conclusion of tho big Randwick fixture for, during tho 1 week, his colt, St. Francis, was backed 1 for a "packet" to win the New Zealand } Cup. Several times lately tho Cup has ? been won by horses who liavo competed i at Randwick in the early spring. Noctui- > form, Vice-Admiral, and Midnight Sun > are cases in point. No Wellington horses "are engaged at tho Gisborne meeting on Thursday and Friday. ' Acceptances for tho first day's handicaps and entries for the Trial Plate, to bo run at Treutham next month* are , duo on Friday. Mr. G. L. Stead has purchased (in , Auckland) the hunter Tim Doolan, and ths chestnut has already arrived at • Christchurcli. Tho new owner, doubtless, intends to endeavour to win the Hunters' Hurdles and the Plate at tho forthcoming National meeting. At Ellerslio Tim Doolan showed himself to bo possessed of a lot of pace and he jumps well. Tho committee of tho Auckland Racing Club have notified thp owner of Naumai that it would bo advisable if his horse received a little education at the barrier before he was started at Ellerslio again. A. J. MTlinn, who was injured when Icel fell with him on the concluding day of tho A.R.C. winter meeting, is making a good recovery at the Auckland Hospital, although still confined to his bed. That prominent hurdle horseman, _ A. Julian, is having quite an innings just now. On top of his throo victories at Hastings the Karamu horseman won two races at Napier. A half-brother by Field Battery to The Dodger is being broken in at Hawera. As affording some idea of the magnitude of turf operations in England, it may be said that during tho first seven weeks of the current flat racing season there 824 races, of the aggregate value of .£88,561, were decidpd. Of that total 140, of a mile and a quarter and upwards, were iof the value of ; and 178, run over a shorter, course than one mile, were worth .£31,870. Prize-money for second and third places is not taken into account in these figures. According to a Melbourne paper, the Now Zealander, Captain Jingle, who is in the Grand National Steeplechase with 12st. lib., was a starter in the Jumpers' Plat race at Aspondule, on Wednesday, and showed plenty of pace in the early part of tho race. It is rather early yet to expect Captain Jingle to appear quite at his best, for it may be recalled that ho was only taken up in March aftc-r a sis months' spell in the paddocks. AUSTRALIAN RACING. (Eec. June 29, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, June 28. Don Qiiex and Valido secured seconds and Sir Artegal and Manakau third places at tho Canterbury races. I
