It i>) supposed tho firo occurred as the result of a spark from tho engine. The wholo outfit was insured for .£425 in the Northern Assuranco Company. Tho damago is estimated at ..£2OO. The engine was not destroyed. Tho total takings at tho Band Carnival at tho Opera House on Friday night amounted to a little over j;EO. The promoters now havo a surplus of about .£250 over expenses. It is expected.that Saturday's receipts will bring the amount to .£•100. ( Captain V. A. Kelsall, staff officer of Senior Cadets in Christchurch, has been transferred to Palmcrston North, to tako up the position of ailjutaut of tho 6th Mounted Rifles. NAPIER, The fiftieth annual general meeting of the Hawko's Bay A. and P. Society was held in tho society's rooms, Tennyson Street, 011 Friday. Air. T. H. Lowry, ot' Okawa, was elected president for a second term. Air. Lowry was absent, being on a trip to the South Sea Islands, and in his place Air. F. W. Williams presided. In referring" to tho question of the new showground nt Tomoana, tho annual report mentions that the amount of .£2983 lis. had been received as donations towards tho cost, aud there wero other donations promised which had not yet como to hand. Tho society has also agreed to purchase an additional area of soven or eight acres adjoining the area purchased last year from Messrs. Nelson Bros., Ltd. • Constable Charles King, of the Gisborne police' force, has been transferred to Napier. > WANGANUI. Tliil'ty-threo men are actively engaged in pushing 011 the Aramoho drainage works. The main 18-inch sewer is nowcrossing 'the.railway line at Spier Street, and will bo continued to Ballanco Street. Work is being pushed through very difficult country, and a good deal of timber is being used in the trenches. The branch sewers in connection with the Svork are well in hand. The present works will not bo carried any further than the main railway line, says the "Chronicle," though tho question of continuing tho system is under tho consideration of tho Borough Council. An improvement at Castlccliff which will ; bo appreciated is the erection of finger-posts with'the name'of each street thereon. Dearth of drinking water is quite an unusual complaint to make at this time of tho year. At Putiki, however, residents, who mainly draw their supply from tanks, are becoming anxious, thero being only a week's supply at most, while rain has not fallen for three weeks. Many of the Natives at Pntiki get their water from artesian .wells, but - the wa'ter so obtained is hard. Recently An invitation was extended to the Rev. H. L; Blamires to take charge of' tho district. It is understood that Mr. Blamires has notified tho trustees of the Napier Trinity Church of his intention to accept the invitation. Tho change has to be ratified by the WosConference, to be held next April. ; NEW PLYMOUTH. Since the recent completion of the oil refinery, many inquiries are reaching the directors of tho Taranaki (N.Z.) Oil Fields, Ltd., for tho various refined products which are to be manufactured. On Friday evening the Taranaki Arts and Crafts Society continued their exhibition in the Brougham Street Hall. Tho principal ©vent of the evening was the drawing of the art union. During the evening Messrs. Hutton and .Fredericks gave so_ng3, Miss Smith playing the accompantmcnts. A piano solo was also given by Aliss "Poppy" Mills. Thoi ringing of the firebell at about G o'clock on Friday night caused a -large crowd to fill Devon Street. Tho scene of •the disturbance was at Air.• Furlong's residence in Young Street, and there undoubtedly was a fire, but it was confined to a fireplace, and'it was a few sparks from the chimney that caused someone to ring th<> bell. Under tho circumstances tho services of the brigade were not required.-. On Thursday _ evening the members of St. Alary's Choir attended a "social" at the vicarage. An enjoyable evening was spent, the first part beting taken ,up by progressive euchre,. Miss M. Thomson and Mr. T. Alackay winning the prizes. In his annual report to the Alasterton Fro Board, Superintendent Jenkins; stated that during the year the Fire Brigade had responded to thirty-two firo alarms, which were seventeen in excess of tho number of the previous year. Tho value of property in which fires .occurred totalled iC5375 on contents, and .£4790 on buildings. The insurances amounted' to .£3393 and .£2735 respectively. The estimated loss, covered by insurance, was .£BBI 7s. on contents, and ,£llO4 on buildings, the uncovered loss being =£1071 17s. and .£845 respectively. Tho estimated total loss by fire for the year was 4s. on contents, and ,£I ( J49 on buildings, being a decrease on tho previous year of ,£1558. In the Magistrate's Court on Friday, Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M.', gave judgment for tho plaintiff for J325, and costs .£8 17s. Gd., in a caso in which Bernard Doran, an employee at the Waingawa Freezing .Works, claimed .£IOO from Hole, Holland and Co.. for damagi sustained in a collision with defendants' motor-car. Counsel for the defence gave notice of his intention to appeal. An expert rabßit-trapper in the Masterton district is stated to have been earning Mrom .£5 to .£7 per week during the last few months. At a meeting in connection with the Socicty for tho Preservation of the Health of Women and Children, Air. J. AI. Cora dine was elected president, and Mrs. T. F. Watson hon. secretary and treasurer. District Nurse Jones generously offered to instruct mothers in the nursing of children, free of charge. > Eight applications have been received for workers' homes on the .site recently selected in tho neighbourhood of Masterton for the purpose. In his speech at Alakomako on Wednesday night, Alajor Lilly announced tlint Air; John Alathews, of Manga'hao, had offered to present a handsome trophy for competition among tho local Territorials. In acknowledging tho gift, Major Lilly stated that ho thought it would probably ho placed as a prize for shooting. FEILDINU. A local authority says tho flocks and herds in this district aro wonderfully free from disease. There has not been a single caso of lnammitis amongst dairy cattle reported for some tima. ' feed is reported to bo short, but so lout as tho weather remains' kindly the' stock will keep up well. On Friday afternoon Mr. G. de S. Bayliss, of the Agricultural Department, was to havo given a lecture in the Technical School on the renovation of hilly pastures. As showing tne apathy of local fanners, only two or three turned up, and, therefore, tho lecture was abandoned. A meeting of the' Ploughing ilatcli Committee was held oil Friday attornoon, when it was decided, owing to lack of support, to postpone tho match till next year. The Taonui Girls' Hockey Club held an enjoyable social in the schoolroom on Friday evening.. Mr. H. K. Bowater had charge of tho proceedings, and during the evening, Air. Cameron, who, is severing his connection with Alessrs. Gorton and Son after 20 years' service, to go farming on his own account, was entertained by representatives of local stock-dealing firms on Friday night, and presented with a case of pipes and a travelling rug, Miss Cameron receiving a gold brooch. To stimulate interest in'this year's competitions, tho committee of the Horowheuua Hockoy Association, at its meeting on Friday night, regraded tho various teams in this district, the first round having been concluded. ' At the Ladies' Shakespeare Club on Friday evening, Miss Stucky. and Miss Tonkinson, two members of the club, wero tendered a farewell social. They havo received promotion from the local school, and are leaving Levin in a few days' time. At Friday night's meeting of the Levin Debating Society the > sabject discussed was, "Are the militant! Suffragettes justified in their tactics?" Air. T. AI. Kingdom' was in the chair, and ladies predominated in the audience. At the conclusion . of the speeches for and against, a 'vote of the audience was taken on tho merits of the debate, and the voting was found to be even. The chairman gavo" his vote with tho negatives. MARTINBOROUGH. A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt of Mr. J. Donnelly, contractor, was held in the Courthouse on Friday. Sir. W. B. Chennells, Deputy-Official Assignee, presided. Bankrupt, under examination, attributed his position 'to losses made on the farm ho had leased; tho rent he said being too high. The meeting decided to adjourn till a later dato to allow matters in connection with sale of chaff andleaso of farm being arranged. MARTOW? • There was nearly a big conflagration at Alarton Town Hall on Thursday night. Ihe Red Dandies Company are giving entertainments at the hall, and it appears that before the curtain went up on that' evening some of tho scenery, which was of a flimsy nature, caught fire. . Mr. Knigge, the Town Clerk, and others who were m .close attendance, acted with great' presence of mind and tore the burning material down before the fire could spread. Michael James Daiton was on Saturday morning, in the Carterton Polico Court, sentenced to six months' imprisonment oil a charge of vagrancy. Ho had previously been convicted., TAIHAPE. Councilor Grainger has been asked by the chairman of tho Woodville County Council to represent it at the County Councils' Conlerenco in Wellington, vice Councillor Escott, wlio oannot spare tho timo for it. Air. Thompson has finished his prospecting for coal in tho Alaharahara district. Although he did not have much to say about what he discovered (says the "Examiner"), ho appeared hopeful. • Before leaving Alaharahara, Mr. Thompson had a look at tho copper mine, and lie will toport on that also.
