June 29, 5.5 p.m.) Sofia, June 20. The Bulgarian memorandum to Eussia claims the contested zone in Macedonia on ethnological grounds. If Russia is not disposed to assign Bulgaria the whole it is suggested that a plebiscite should b© taken in the disputed districts. Tho memorandum' recalls that Alexander 11, under the San Stefano Treaty, declared that Macedonia wag. Bulgarian soil. SERVIANS PURSUE BULGARS. A RETREAT IN HASTE. Salonika, June 27. The Treaty of Alliance which was concluded between Serna and Bulgaria ii I March, 1912, besides specifying the natun of the military assistance mutually to be | rendered by the two States, also prcscribied the future division of any territorial conquests which tho Allies might make-ir a successful war jointly to be undertaker against Turkey. By this Treaty tw< spheres of . Ottoman territory wero pn> scribed, one for each Ally, within which tho future sovereignty of each was rnutually recognised. As tho destiny of ccrtain districts could not then be determined, a certain area between the two spheres was and it wa6 agreed tha,t tilt arbitration of the Tsar of Russia shoulc be accepted as deciding the exact division iof this debatable area between Bulgaria and Serria. Tie area left for arbitration consists ol tho Kazas of ICumanovo, Uskub, Krit chevo, and Dibra, and also the Nahifll of Struga in the ICaza of Ochrida. Owinp to tile decision of tho Powers a large pari of the Kaza of Dibra has been included in Albania. In consequence of tho formation of this State the Servians, who are ir military occupaition of Monastir and the oountry to tho north and oust of it, desire toi modify, the territorial flgroemoni of March, 1912, and have manifested a desire to retain not only tho whole of "the area left for arbitration, but also a con(Adorable extent of the territory which in that instrument is recognised as being within tho Bulgarian sphere. 86,734 CASUALTIES. BULGARIAN LOSSES IN THE WAR. What another war would mean to tho Mlies may be judged from the following figures:— 1 According- to the -official returns the Bulgarian losses in the war were:— Killed: 330 officers, 29,711 men. Wounded: 950 officers, 52,550 men. Missing: 3193 officers and men. Bulgaria has a total male population of some 2,200,000 of all ages, so that ono male jn every itwenty-five in the country is either dead, wounded, or missing. The game percentage of the males of the TJnitod Kingdom would be about 920,000.
