WAS THE DRESS A FIT ?
■ 3 LADIES & A PUZZLED BENCH. .(By Taleermh.—Proas Assoolation.i ' Auckland, June 28. / An amusing dispute ia which Mr. Kettle, ,6.11., was called upon to decide botwoen a dressmaker and her client as to the fit of a dress,' was concluded tnis morning, the decision going in favour of tho dressmaker. Mr. Kettle had adjourned the case a fortnight ago to enable each side to get an expert to see the dress tried ton, but, when the experts had given evidence this morning, the Court was no bearer a decision than it had been before. J. A. Spencer said that his experience as a tailor extended from the time that the was 18 years of age, and he declared that the dress was . a perfect fit. \V. A. Bunker, who had had 25 years' . experience as a ladies' tailor, declared that the dress did not fit at all. Mr.- Kettle: It's most extraordinary. Here are two men—one has had 25 years' sxperience, and the other has been in the trade since ha was. 13, and ono Bays it is a first-class fit, while tho other says that it is no good. I oan't decide. I think it is high timo (went on Mr. Kettle, with a 6milej that I had two ladies as assessors to sit with me to decide theso cases. I can decide anything about men's clothes, bat, with the ever-changing fashions in ladies' dresses, it is impossible. I Suggest that some independent expert be called in to see the dress. Counsel suggested that the head dressmaker of one of the large drapery firms should be called in. •. ' ! Mr. Kettle: Very well, I'll adjourn the Court for any hour; • Both parties can go and see the lady,-and I will accept ier decision) At the end of an hour tho parties came back with the head fitter of Messrs. Milne and' Choyoe's establishment, who pronouncod the dress a good, fit, though some, whnt'the worse_ for the numerous try-ons. Miv Kettlo said that he would give judgment for the plaintiff for 295., the amount claimed, and 16s. costs. "I wish ladies wrald make use of a private arbitrator in , these matters," he remarked as "the partieg left the Court.
