Word has been received of the death of Air. William i'Mslier, oldest son ol' llie lata Mr. Georgo fisher, for several terms Mayor and M.l\ for Wellington, and brother of tbo Hon. !•'. M. B. Fisher. Deceased. wlio was about 4a years of aye, was educated at tlio Thorndon School. As a young man ho was a noted athlete. As a fine forward, with plouty of paco and weight, he was prominent in tlio ranks of tlio Wellington Football Club when it won tlio championship in 181)0, d tho lato Mr. Fisher was also a representative player. Uo was also champion amateur heavy-weight boxer of his day. Subsequently ho'resided at OtaUi for many years. Uo leaves a wife (neo Miss C'imino) and two children. On Friday afternoon, Sir. K. Commissioner Richards, of tlio Salvation Army, will leave for Aucklaud today to meet Commissioner Lamb, tho Army's foreign secretary, who is duo to arrive from Vancouver by tho Niagara. Mr. Alfred Linley, who has been in Australia for somo weeks past, is returning to Wellington on Wednesday with the intention of inaugurating in New Zealand an independent film-hiring business. Tho pending retirement is announced of Mr. John Evans,"Acting-Chief Clerk in tho Police Department. Mr. Evans is one of the officers about to bo retired in can-' noction with tho enforcement of tho re-tiring-ago provision by tho Public Service Commissioner. Evans, Official Assignee for tho Canterbury district, is about to retire, says a southern exchange, Ho has been in tho Civil Service for over thirty-five years. Mr. Evans, prior o his going to Christchurch, was in tho office of tho Receiver of' Land Kovenue in Invercargill. When tho Bankruptcy Act came into force ho was appointed to the Official Assignees office in Christchureh, under Mr. Greenwood, and on his chief's retirement some yeara ago, Mr, Evans was appointed Official Assignee'. The Rev. Harold Purchase (Christohurch), who has suffered from ill-health for spuie time, has been compelled' to forward to Bishop Julius his resignation of the position of vicar of St John's Church, Latil mer Square. Tho death is announoed of an Ellesracr© pioneer, in tho person of Mr. Joseph Young, at the ago of 91. Mr. Young was born in Ireland, and landed at Melbourne in 1847. Aft,oT remaining there for a year or two ho went back to Ireland, but subsequently returned to Melbourne, and for about four years was engaged in mining and other pursuits in Victoria. Mr. Young then orossod to New Zealand, landing at Dunedin, whero lie was employed for somo timo helping to lay out tho city. He afterwards took part in tho Gabriel's Gully and Skipper's Gully rushes, and then went across to the West Coast. He wont to Canterbury in 18G4 and bought a farm at Lakeside, on which he lived till a short timo before liis death. Ho was married in 18C9, and his I wifo survives him.
