ON THE HOCKEY FIELD.

COLLEGE IN FORM. KARORI k WELLINGTON DRAAV. Vic. College .... 9 'United 1 Ifarori 1 Wellinglon .... 1 Insurance 1 MeiroiioliUin ... 0 Tho lot of the hockey player 011 Hahtrdsy,\ms quits a happy one. The weather ww ideal and the turf nt Karori Cork was in well nicli perfect condition. Victoria College had a day out against United, whilst Karori were hard put to it to bring off even a draw with tho Wellington men. Government Insurance just managed to defeat .Metropolitan. Details ore as follow:— COLLEGE & UNITED. United cut a sorry figure against Victoria College. The studcnls excelled in every depaflnient, and it became evident right from tho "bully" that United were in for a drubbing. Fast play of a loose nature followed for some minutes after the start until from near mid-field C. Strack secured and set off for the circle. He cleverly beat two opponents and sent in a fine goal. College returned to the attack immediately and from a warm rally in tho circlo G. Strack scored. Tho suddenness of it all seemed to quito disorganise the United combination, and it was only faulty shooting that prevented College from again gooling. C. Strack set things moving again and with a fino centre enabled Cleghom to notch a further fcore. United mado but a feeble attempt to rally and their stay iu C-ollego carters was cut short by tho sound defence of tho Green backs. The 'Varsity men again swarmed round United's goalmouth and from a scramble Cleghorn added another score. United's defence now improved sufficiently to enable them to withstand further onslaught until tho spell ended; the tally reading; College, 4; United, 0. The second spell saw United fall 6till lurther in the rear, the Collegians literally romping through them. C. Strack notched another goal, end a minuto later his brother (G. Strack) follow suit with a beautiful shot which completely mystified United's goal-keeper. Still the College attack did not let up. Cleghorn j got busy again in the circle, but he overj ran the ball. Griffiths, however, was handy, and the lead was increased to 7. C. Strack soon after nddtv l ■ nothcr. United forwards now manasv» to work into the College territory aiiw -their prowess was rewarded with a good goal shot by Andrews. They made but one more promising effort but it was not to be, for Cleghorn intercepted and carried play up field and he subsequently scored. College were still attacking when time sounded with tho score reading: College, 9; United, 1. Mr. VV. J. Organ was referee. WELLINGTON & KARORI. The encounter between- Karori (who defeated Victoria College on the previous Saturday), and Wellington was, perhaps, the most keenly contested 011 the ground. Wellington set a merry pace from the outset, their forwards working an entrancu into the suburban team's circle. Karori, by the efforts of L. Da'vies and Campbell, wero enabled to clear, however. Honours wero even for a little until Ivarori set out for Wellington's base, but their effort wws nullified by faulty shooting. The Wellington backs struggled, and finally managed to repel tlu enemy, and by commendable combination I aion had the ball into the circle when I Hay succeeded in netting' it. Wellington, ' 1; Kqrori, 0. Karori retaliated spiritedly, but without rosult. Tht»y camo again, but by inaccurate shooting wero once tnoro compelled to retire. Wellington in tho second half once more opened vigorously. Karori survived tho siege, and were enabled to transfer the ball to, the enemy's goal-mouth, where their dntormir.cd effort* wero again abortive. Soon, however, the suburbanite; were given an opportunity, and Mnrphy was equa'J to it. Wellington, 1; Karori, i Tho gamt' was vigorously contated until the final lrhistlo blow v leaving it i, draw. Mr. M'li'enzao was refer-se. INSURANCE & METROPOLITAN. Tho TeAmtt of the Insurande-JSetrc politan niatch was responsible fo: soma mild duirprise, and considering 111closen«s of fha score the game w;S particularly unintl-resting. Insurance, who wo«, showed themselves to bo lamentably weak in combination, but individually they wero noticeably been. Metropolitan seem to be. slightly better versed" in the art of combining, but thei'.r attack was quito devoid of vim. Bennett it 'was who scored Ingoal—the only score registered. Play of a more or less scrappy nature characterised tho second half, although tho Metropolitan men. can bo said to have been unlucky to miss scoring on at least two occasions. T'heir defeat will comc as rather a disappointment to the Metropolitan followers, as thev were but two points behind College on the championship ladder. Mr. Cocki-sll was referee. JUNIOR MATCHES.
