4 j"Br "Bully-off."] THE COLLEGE MARCH STOPPED. Downfall of the Leaders. Very few but the team themselves have been holding out hopes for Karori this season. The cognoscenti, • however, came across the unexpected in last Saturday's clash between the students iiud last year's champions. It was a Sure victory for jCollogo in the first lap of the competition, and the most that Karoiy wero expected to do at the eofcond meeting was to reduce Una heavy deficit of the winning, team— and the miming team was put down to be' College. But Karori Was Karori. How Karori came out ahead will bo always remembered by the crowd who lined "No, 2" at tho Kccreation Ground. It was a great game—the best seen this season—and went to show that Karori is not quite the back number it lias been said to be—not by a good margin. Those College dashes were broken up, and, like "the autumn leaves of Vallombrosa," tho charging units were scattered pell-mell by tho biilliant defence bf Campbell and Co. The question no\v arises: lias the College forward lino met with the defence it should have done in past matches? Tho Greens have beeh running up "cribket (scores" pretty well every playing day, and now, when Karori comes along with its full oomplemeut—hey presto [ The Green whirlwind meets with a Black typhoon, and the typhoon wins., Karori made many changes in the positions of their team, and tnis, with Campbell aiid Davies in form, caa be pointed to as having a good deal to do with the Black success. College played their usual dashing game, but their victors weiro a better team on the day. Iv. Strack was away from the team, and Beero, his emergency, was liardly up to senior form. The Other 'Games. Metropolitan jMUranco prevailed in their wit little interest was ©vincea at either of the games. Metropolitan is the team that ishould give the leading elerai something to think about when they meet, for tho combination in the Red and Black operations has evidently undergone a vast, improvement. What of Canterbury? Canterbury has 51 teams battling it out in their competitions. v The management has suffered a set-back through compulsory reorganisation duo to the coining of a universal Saturday half-holi-day. This lias meant the merging of the two associations—Thursday and Saturday —into ono, and naturally the competitions will not be in machine order till tho seaBon is well advanced, "Bully Off" made a few inquiries when in Chris'tchurch during the week, and ascertained that tho Red and Blacks aro not ever-anxious to challenge for Shield honours this year.. They are not afraid, however, of, being able to get a good contingent togother for iho battle. Tie association owes visits to 1-lawko's Bay and West Coast. At a meeting to bo held during the woek Shield matters are likely to be discussed, when it might happen that, in fulfilling their Obligation to Hawkc's Bay, they will take in Wellington, and count the gaine a challenge ono. Wellington will hope so. A Good Man Gone, Parton, ox-Karori, is now in tho Cathedral City, and is likely to bs>' wielding tho ash for one of •the clubs down there. Against College on Saturday Parloli was always brilliant, and all through the seaSon Jio has been among tho proiuinents. Tho team that gets him in Christcliiirch will be getting a good man. Ladies' Hockey, Saturday last brought the first round of tho competition to a close, and tho results leave Rambler A at the head of the list, with Sirens second. The association intends to play a jocond round, so tho battle is still full of possibilities. Some bf tho teams in tho contest have lately shown a marked improvement, and the leaders will have to figUt bravely to Vclain their positions. Dealing with Inst week's games, the star attraction was the meeting of Rambler A and Sireiis. Though the game was very interesting, tho standard of play was not up to tho> level of the previous tussles between these rivals. Tho fine forward passing rushes that have gained Rambler A their victories this season wero far and few between. Times out of number tho wings found themselves unsupported, aud were compelled to make their effort ioiie-hnmkd. On the other hand,: tho weakness with the Sirens was tho bunching that took place when in their opponents' circle. Good chances to score were thrown away through lack of understandiic between the forwards as to who should have tho shot, and in consequence the defenders were enabled to clear their goal repeatedly, l'laycrs that caught the eye were: Misses Lang, G. Harris, Walker, Finney, ami. Cameron for the winners, and Misses Thompson, Brown, M'Doiiaid, and Dement for the Sirens. The first goal for Ramblers was tho result of a brilliant run by. Miss Lang who outwitted her opponents defence and found the net with a good shot. I'lle famo lady repeated her run later in tho game, but her shot went over the top. of the goal. Bath sides lost good opportunities of scoring through wild shooting. In tho, other games tho results were <ts expected—Victoria College defeated College Old Girls by 2 goals to one, Miss Dagg goaling on two occasions for the Winners and Miss Shearer scored tho only ono for the losers. This game was spoilt from a spectacular point of view by tho number of breaches committed by tho players. The Girls' College had little difficulty in defeating Ramblers B by 3 goals to nil, and St. Augustine's won from Gregg's by the same total. Taking tho score as an indication the Gregg team made a big improvement on their previous displays, and "Bully-off" hopes that this gamo will bo tho fore-runner o! \i continued improvement.
