CITY ESTIMATES.
FOR YEAR 1913-14. RECEIPTS & OUTLAY EVEN. EXTRA KATE MOOTED. COUNCIL TURNS IT DOWN. Tho City, Council met yesterday afternoon to consider the estimates for the current year. As first presented, tho estimated expenditure was .£8353 in excess of tho estimated receipts, but tho council decided oil a reduction of expenditure amounting to .£OO6B. This reduction, with an additional receipt of ,£2352, which will be received out of rates, consequent 011 the now valuation of the suburbs, will give tlio council an estimated surplus of receipts over expenditure of <£07. ' , In moving' tho adoption of tlie amended >i estimates to tlio council, the Mayor (Mr. ! J. P. Luke) said that tho reductions had met with tho approval of tho Engineer. Tho reductions totalled ,£OO6B. Tho Engineer's schedule, as first proposed, provided l'or a sum of .£10,322, which was .£8909 in excess of lost year. Tho, council had reduced the original ktim by/tti33ls. Itcscrves had also been cut down by i£1750, consequent on tho facl; that a sum had been- provided for tho Forestry Department, which would carry oil a portion of tho work which was carried on by tho Reserves Committee. Lighting had been reduced by .£353, leaving tlio expenditure equal to that of last year; ,£l5O had also boon taken off expenditure on tho Zoo, and .£SOO off tho sum (£1000) provided for public conveniences. Tho • Mayor further pointed out that tho Engineer got an additional sum over last year of £5594 for street works, .£lO3l for scavenging, and J21041 for tho collection of rubbish. Theso sums had been maintained. Tho expenditure on public conveniences had been reduced to .£SOO, but ; if the finances of tho council permitted, an additional.sum of ,£SOO would bo spoilt. Councillor- Luckio seconded tlio motion to adopt the estimates. Extra Rate Proposed. Councillor Fitzgerald moved as an amendment that a rate of 1-lOth of o. penny should lw struck to carry nut urgent necessary works, as rocommemlod by the City Engineer. Councillor Hindmarsh seconded (he amendment, and Councillor Flelclirr sup- ; ported it. ; The propo&il was strongly opposed by Crs. Fuller, Earlwr, Frost, Godber, I.Heine, and Wright. • .
