FOXTON. ■ A man named Eobert Henderson n.rrivod by tho Palmcrston train on Tuesday night, and, stepping off tho am-inge on tho opposite sido to tho platform, walked towards the wharf under the impression that ho was going townwards. In tho darkness he walked, over the wharf, and in his dcscent a nail caught in his clothing and held him suspended, his body being almost totally immersed. About half an hour after. .Hamji, a Native heard cries for help,'and proceeded to tho spot, and rescued Henderson from his perilous position. Tho manwas in a. half frozen condition, taken to tho bandroom nearby, and finally to tho Family Hotel, whoro ho was given a hot bath, and provided .with a dry outfit of clothes, and otherwiso hospitably looked after by tho proprietor. lln the morning, however/it was discoverod that Henderson had disappeared, taking with him the dry clothes prodded by tho good samaritan. The matter is now in tho bands of tho polioo, who ono trying to locato tho man. . On Wednesday tho death took place of Mr. John Baker, wdll known looaUy. at tho ago of 80 years. Mr. Baker arrived in Foxton 10 years ago, and until his retirement followed tho calling of mechanical engineer. His wife predeceased him about 23 years ago. Ho loaves a family of threo eons, li-ojiaton (I'oxtom), Arthur (Timaru), and George (Palinorston), and one daughter, Mrs. Allen (Lov™), a number of grandchildren. Tho funeral was held yesterday.
