NOTES .ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph.—Special Reporter.! Napier, June 25. The conditions were most favourable for the opening day at Greenmeadows. lho usual large crowd turned out and were rewarded with some fine racing. Tho bi»'steeplechase was a poor race, but the jumping event for hacks was a grand contest, and tho result was m doubt the whole way. The stipendiary stewards were present, but excepting an informal ta k with tho rider and- trainer, of Cftlly. Bridge, nothing was done. There were numerous falls, but happily they wero not attended with.serious results. Callv Bridge finished up favonrito in the Hack Hurdles and the support of him was fully justified by the running, even though ho was out of a placo on both days at Hastings. At tho wile post lie displaced Morning from 1 the lead, and from that point he wa9 always a winner. Peary ran a good Tace but had no chance at the difference in tho weights. Morning was better, for his raco at Hastings, but ho did not strip well, and several of his usual supporters deserted him on this account. Aviator, Who ran in the flame colours as Leolanter, was in front for half a mile, but ho then faded out of it and finished last. Of the others. Merrio Valet made the best showing and was fourth at the finish. Tn tho Hack Steepleclifise Fireworks, The Ranter, Pond Memory, Master Webb, and Makiri were all well supported. It was a pretty race throughout, and the ing was very good. At the start Makiri led Wirral and a strung-out field. The first to dron out was Marmoe, who ran off at the back of the course. Passing ■Hie stand the first time, Makiri led Master Webb. Wirral, and Fireworks. The last-named was jumping -well, but was lieaten for pace on the flat. At tho brush. The Ranter started to go up. but he fell heavily. Makiri and Master Webb were just ahead of Castle Canter and Fireworks as they raced to the sod wall. The rider of Makiri then took the wrong course, but lie got back in time and jumper! the last brush in front. Fireworks cut off a lot of ground, ond was first at the last hurdle and from then he was not troubled.--Master Webb was close up third and then came Castle .Canter. .The winner jumped too high at tho first few fences, but his rider. later enualised this by cutting off tho corners. He staved on well, but Makiri was a bit unluokv. Diavolo and Arohakau wero withdrawn from the Stewards' Stakes, but a big field of sixteen runners still remained. Re;l-. loh was favourite, with Mummer next in demand. A good start was effected, and Falsetto, with Black Lupin, led down tho back, the remainder being strung out, with'the favourite in tho middle. Amber and White led round' tho bend, but Mys- . teriach was first into the straight, and, coming on boldly, tho bay horse won very easily from Mummer and Matlow. both of whom came from a long way back, but tho winner was further back still. As the horses passed the six-furlong nost the favourite got a bad run, but did not look as if he would have had a -chance. Black Lupin ran a grand race, and so did Brown Trout, 1 who was finishing on well." lho winner'hod Deoley in the saddle at Hastings, and started a hot favourite, while to-(fay he wns one of the long-priced division when he was ridden by a le.« wellVnown jockey. Ho i= owned bv Mr. w. ■ ftunter. president' of the TTawlre s Bay Jockey Club, and the principal patron of 2. Goosemnn's .stables. -R) Dorado, Loolanter, and The Ranter woro withdrawn from the big. Steenlerbnso. The Hastings-trained horse, Tho Sonriard- with Julian in tho saddle, \vas
made a firm favourite, and ho won after giving a good exhibition ot jumping. At tho jump-away Waitarere and Donzel led off, but tho old Porirua horso outinmped tho field, and led for a mile, when lie to tiro and fell back. Donzel then led from The Spaniard, with the others strung out. Tho brush at tho back of the' course brought Donzel down in tho last round, and The Spaniard then wont on and won by fifty yards. Waitarero was pulled up-after going two miles. Appm got round safely, but was a long way back, and tho old Auckland gelding, Rebel, also completed the course. Sunrny ran off, and Bravest and Tyrannic fell. Gerbera, Daisy Paul, and Braebiirn wero the most fancied in the Ladies' Bracelot. At the start To Awahou and -Perceler mado tho running, with Daisy Paul and Braebiirn bringing up the rear. Braeburn moved up at tho half-mile, wit the chestnut mare ran in the rear tilt the straight was entered, and then slio put in a great run, and was-going better than anything as they passed the post. Braebiirij. and Settler were first into the straight, but tho latter finished best, and won very comfortably. Tho winner is ownod by Mr. Paul Hunter, and is also trained by R. Gooseman. The race will do Daisy Pa ul a lot of good, and it will be no surprise to find -her popular again to-morrow if her owner decides to race Prince Eddie and Bollin were tlie best liked for tho HuTdle Race. Tho scratchings wero Beacon, Player, and Whimper. Prince Eddie was slow to find his feet, but tliere was a' good run to _ tho first fence, and from hero he was in cliargo until fclio luilf-mile, wliero Allure ran up to him. Over tho last couple of. furlongs the Wanganui horso had matters till his own way, and won nicely. Aberbrothock was third and Windage next. Bollin ran his race in patches. With six furlongs to go his namo was being called but oyer the last half-mile ho tired to nothing. It was a good field that contested tlio lost race, but the public succeeded in 'lading the winner, though he was certainly lucky to score. This was Bed Book, the liighly-bred Australian gelding, who had tho services of B. Deeley. He drew Ito. 1 position at the barrier, and was lucky enough to jump out clear of the field, and though Axis and Morton soon rail up to him he was not headed, and outstayed them in the run home. Field Force enmo from a long way back, and ran the field to within a length of tho winner. Had lie been bettor .handled ho could not have lost. Morton is improving with racing, and will ho a better horso to-morrow. Itew and Heather were, unlucky.
