AH tho Cabinet' Ministers are in Wellington to-day. Tho Hons R. H. Rhodes, ,T. B. Callan, M.L.C., and Messrs. W. Nosworthy, M.P., ■'V- Sulcy, M.P., C. E. Statham, M.P., and A. Maloolm, M.P., are passengers by tho Maori, due this morning from Lyttelton. Tho Hon. Sir Clias. Bowen, Speaker of tho Legislative Council, is also a passenger by tho samo steamer. Mr. Martin Kennedy arrived from London by tho Remuera last evening. Tho vessel will not berth until this morning. His Honour Mr. Justice Edwards arrived from Now Plymouth last night. Mrs. Ernest H. Qucree, of Wellington, has received a cable message from London, stating that her daughter, Mis 9 Reno Q.ueree, the brilliant pianist, who has been studying under Mndame Carreno in Berlin, has been engaged by Mr. Hugo Gorlitz to tour with Melsti, the Polish violinist.
Alexander J. Rutherford, clerk assistant to the House of Representatives, has resigned his position -owing to illhealth. Mr. Rutherford joined tho Houso staff as a junior clerk in 1879. From tins position he roso to that of record clerk, and in 1889 he became second cleric assistant. _ In IS9B he was promoted to tho position of clerk assistant, and ho has held that position ever since. Mr. Rutherford is now 01 years, of age. 110 resides at Masterton, and he has n sheep run at Alfredton. ■ Several promotions in the staff will follow Mr. Rutherford's retirement. Mr. A. F. Lowe, now second clerk assistant, is to be made clerk assistant. Mr. W. Kane, formerly reader, is to. bo second clerk assistant; Mr. W. A. Dasent, record clerk, will be reader; Mr. Walter Collings, committee clerk, will bo record clerk; and Mr. G. W. Otterson has been appointed indexer to Hansard. Dr. and Mrs. M'Gavin, of Wellington, leavo for London by tho Arnw.i on August 7. Mr._ William Foster, headmaster of the District High School, Petone, is ill with pleurisy. At a meeting of tho Wairarapa Presbytery yesterday tho resignation of the R«v. J. S. Young, of tho Lansdowne charge, on account of ill-health, was accepted with regret, and tho Rev. A. T. Thompson was appointed moderator of the charge. Lieutenant-Colonel Powley. of tho Salvation Army, is under orders to leavo England shortly to take up tho position of chief secretary for the New Zealand Territory, vice Lieutenant-Colonel Fisher, who has been appointed to a position in th® Foreign Ofiico at headquarters' in London. Mr. Gordon L. Conrad, advance representative for the Hamilton-Pliinmcr Dramatic Company, arrived from tho south yesterday, to make arrangements for tho Wellington season, which begins on Thursday next at tho Opera House. Captain Hennah was a passenger by the Pateena from Nelson and I'icton. last evening.
