TOURING LEAGUE TEAM.

DEFEATED BY NEW SOUTH WALES. By, Telegraph—Preaa Association—Copyright

(Rec. June 23, 8.55 p.m.) ■ Sydney, June 23. ; Despite tho Terr muddy condition of tho ground, an excellent and fast game took place between New Zealand and New South Wales, witnessed by 23,000 spectators, including the Governor (Sir Gerald Strickland), tho first occasion of ViceRegal patronage being given to the League game. For New Zealand, Reke replaced Duvall (full-back), the latter replacing Proebstel at three-quarter; for New South Wales M'Cuo replaced Cummins in the forwards. The gamo disclosed a notable improvement in the New South Wales team's plav, as compared with last' Saturday. New Zealand's defeat was duo to this rather than to any deterioration of their own play. New South Wales also hooked the ball in the scrum oftener than on Saturday, and this enabled the hacks to become more dangerous. The New South Wales attack was altogether too strong, while their defence was also extremely solid; their backs handled the ball very cloverly, and showed great pace, considering the condition of the ground. The forwards were very evenly matched, and Messenger's goal-kicking, proved an immense help to Now South Wales. New Zealand's score in tho first spell comprised a penalty goal, and a try, both by Ifwerson. For New South Wales, Messenger kicked three penalties, and converted a try scored by Cann. At halftimo New South Wales wero 11, and New Zealand 5. ' , New Zealand's only score in the second epell was a try by Kelly, which Bradley converted. New South Wales, playing with much. dash',, scored five tries—by Frawley, Cann, Dcano, Broomham, and Courtney—of which Messenger converted three, and also kicked a penalty goal. The final result was: New South Wales, 31; Now Zealand, 10.
