PROFITABLE POLO.
• £10,000 TAKEN IN AMERICA. London, June IG. The amount paid in admission money at the international polo contests, just concluded' at Meadowbrook, Long Island (New York), totalled not less than •£40,000. As thd profits all go to the American Polo Association, this body netted ,£35,000. As previously cabled, tli-o British team was defeated. Two years England made a. great effort to win back the International Polo Cup from America, and was beaten by a very narrow margin. On the last occasion the English team suffered v«.ry much through the failure of their ponies to stand tho ha.rd work .and the climatic changes associated with their journey across the Atlantic. The Duke of Westminster, himself a great polo- player,, go* together for tho recent test matches a powerful troop of the best polo pomes possible. , - The Duke defrayed tho entire expenses incidental to the matches. The ponies camo from Chester in a special train with tliirty-two grooms, who made the journey to America. More than half the ponies were the property of the Duke. Of these Energy, Kilkenny, Tiger, and •Nutmeg made the trip two years ago. ihe average value of these animals works out at .£4OO, but there aro some valued at <£800, and JiIOOO. In all, I ;he entire ttoop may bo valued at =2-0,000, and the ponies were all insured by ttio Atlantic Transport Company.
