"FAMILY SHOPPING."

THE SATURDAY HALF-HOLID.VS', " (By Telegraph,—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, Jufio 23. Somo inquiries mado by a reporter this morning among Karangahapo Rood business peoplo snowed that tho chango to Saturday for the half-holiday has practically abolished "family shopping" among tho workers, This was until lately a great feature of tho trado in Nmvtpii ou Saturday afternoons and oveuings. It was oxpected at one time that when Saturday was mado tho half-holiday much of tho week-end shopping would bo dono in tho morning, but this hone has beeu only partially realised.. The working man's wife generally finds Saturday morning a busy time, as Saturday and Sunday each mean a hot dinner in tho middle of tlio day, whatever may bo the arrangement through tho rest of tho week. Tliisleaves little or no tiino for making purchases, and last Saturday it was found that oven less business than usual was dono aftor 11 a.m., and certainly much' less than was <lono oil Wednesday moriN ings uuder tho old arrangement. Natur* ally the change is falling hardest upon tho smaller shops doing a "catch trailo"in fancy goods. Grocers, drapers, anil dealers "in necessary, or semi-necessary, goods have not, of course, so much cause for complaint. Tho general opinion of tha tradesmen is that tho Saturday halfi. holiday has evidently come to stay, but that its scope will have to bo extended.
