Tho big Western Ocean line* Lusit&nia has the telemotor system of steering gear, in which the movements of the steering wheel in the pilot house are transmitted hydrauli'cally to tho steering engine, several hundred feet away. Recently such a simple occurrence as the falling of a smaJU pieco of ropo or twine into the rack of tho telemotor caused it to bind and iam tho steering gear. This took placo just as tho Lusitania was entering Fishguard harbour, and was about to turn to port to avoid a steamer. Tho strain proved too. great for tho blades of the turbines, which bfeeame twisted "out of their proper pitch.
