On tho first count, leave was given for plaintiffs to move for judgment for J!l!)3 9s. 9d. On the second count a now trial is to bo granted ifl the parties fail to agree aa to remainder of tlio claim, ,£527 i) Cs. 8d u special damages for breach of contract. WATERSIDERS AND FREE LABOIJRi Dunedin, Tuiio 20. The Dunedin Waterside Workers' Dnion held a 6ecret ballot on Thursday on questions submitted to it bj; the Federation; of Labour. The questions practically asked tlio local union whether it was prepared to take any notion to fight against tlio recognition of the Tiiuaru Waterside Workers' Union, wliicli has been registered under tho Arbitration Act. Tho ballot papers were' counted this nfternoon, antf, though it was decidod not to mako public the result of the voting, it is understood that a. considerable majority of workers voted against any action being taken. Iu tho meantime tho men, apparently, are looking forward to "the holding of the big Unity Labour Conference in Wellington in July, as likely to give them a pointer as to what action they shall ultimately ta'ko. . JOURNALISTS' CASE. Christcburch. Juno 28. Tlio hearing of tho journalists' dispute lasted all yesterday until late in tho evening, witnesses coming from Dunedin and Wellington, as well as Christchurch. The employers objected strongly to preference to unionists, and to limitation of hotirs. The Court eventually adjourned in order that a conference miplit bo held between the partiei, with a view to coming to an 1 agreement. Tliel conference was held toda;p. Subsequently it woo reported to tho Court that tho parties had foiled to agree to tho principal points at isßue. DISQUALIFICATIONS, \ _ Dunedin, June 20.
The Otago District Committee last night considered correspondence forwarded. by tho secretary of |;ho Racing Conference in connection with tho dispnto botweon William Kennedy, of Otautau, liorse-owncr, nud his apprentice, J. Walsh. The question at issue was whether Walsh had personally signed his nanio to indentures in. the presence of a witness named Grant. After an exhaustive inquiry, it was unanimously decided that William Kennedy bo disqualified for twelvo months, and James Grant for 6Tx moiiths for corrupt practices. "SOFT DRINK" RESORT. Auckland, Juno 20. William John Arthur' and Henrietta Arthur were convicted at the Police Court , to-day on a charge of soiling liquor without a license. Accused kept a sweets and soft drinks shop, and bupplied a plain clothes constablo with liquor. A subsequent raid by tho police disclosed bottles of whisky and a largo number of empty bottles. Two men camo in whilo tho raid waß on and wero alleged to have purchased drink. Arthur was fined JJIS and his wife £5, tho total penalties (withi costs) amounting to .£22 6s. 6<L
GAS LEAK & PLUMBER'S ACT. Foxton, Juno 20. A gas explosion occurred in a portion' of a brick building just about to bo occupied by Walls, baker, yesterday afternoon. Workmen engaged on tho building smelt gas escaping, _ and a plumber applied a match to a joint. Immediately an explosion occurred, shattering a huge plate-glass window in front of tho shop and a fanlight in the kitchen, and tearing portions of the asbestos ceiling from two rooms. No ono was soriouslj injured. A i cracked .jiipoi was- the causi t, of the leakago. The ' damago don< amounted to J230 or .£lO.

M.P., said ho was opposed on democratic principles to the baro majority, and would continue to opposo it at the risk of political extinction. Miss Souper was never dependent on 111 - . Wilson, and tho whole annuity Ims noiv been settled on Mrs. Wilson. FIRE AT WESTPORT. Wostport, Juno 20. An eight-roomed house, owned and o(V cupied by Mr. If. F. Munro, ohairman of tho Wostport Harbour Board, was gutted by fire this afternoon.
