RUGBY FOOTBALL AND REFEREES.
Sir,—Be good enough to allow mo a little space in your valuable paper to give my sympathy to the Rugby players and the Wellington Rugby Union, because until they get competent men to control their games they must and -will suffer. I have been a constant "banker" for the Inst four or five years, and I have not seen such a lot of incompetent referees as we have at tho present time. In my opinion there are only about two who should ever be trusted with a Park game. As usual, I was in my place today, and was absolutely disgusted with the manner in which the Poneke v. Athletic game was controlled. I firmly believe that the result ,would have been different had another Teferee had charge of the game. lam not biased in any way. All I expect to see is tho two teams get a "square deal," and in this game, in my they did not. My sympathy has always beon with the referee, but I now think it is the players and union who are to bo sympathised with. Thanking you in anticipation,— I am, etc., DISGUSTED. June 14.
