PAINTERS OUT OF WORK.
"NO USE GOING TO AUCKLAND." (By Telegraph—Prosa Association.) Auckland, June 19. Conditions in the ipainting trade aro very unsatisfactory in Auckland at tho present time, and the names of 35 men who aro seeking employment aro on the books of the union. These aro not the' only tradesmen who are out of work, for there are many men who have not recorded their names, knowing that no good would result from their doing so. The Teasou for the slump is duo to the bad weather which has been frequent of late and tlie fact that numbers of painters are coming to Auckland from the Old Country, the south, and from Sydney. "I don't anticipate that there will do very much work in the painting lino in connection with the Exhibition," the eecretary nf tho union stated t yesterday. "Whatever work will bo required to be done' will probably be left to the last moment, and then we will hare to work night ami day to get it finished. The painting of tho stnlls. Will be about tho only work available, and, as to whether this is likely to lead to the employment of many hands it is, of course, impossible to say. Men now coming to Auckland havo an idea that the Exhibition is going to make work for this city plentiful, and they aro in hopes of obtaining employment. I would like it known in tho south, and in Sydney, that it is no use coming to Auckland for work, as there is no immediate prospect of there being any improvement."
