THE HOLSTEIN BREEDERS.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the HolsteinFriesian Breeders' Association was held this evening.- Jlr. Coleman Phillips presided over an attendance of about thirty members. Tho finances of the association as shown in tho balance-sheet indicated a crcdit of ,£513 25., and the balanco of assets over liabilities amounted to £SOS 2s. lid. Speaking to the report, the chairman said that they had now 202 members, and incoino of JMSO. More members still were wanted, nnd he urged that efforts be made to increase the membership. Regarding entries in the Herd Book, efforts had b:cn made to rectify objections, and it was to be hoped that tho next volume would be better than its predecessors. A great many of the ca,ttle had been imported from Canada and Australia. Ho was in favour of securing importations of strains of Dutch Friesians from Holland, South Africa, or Japan. Both the last-named countries have largely imported direct from Holland. With regard to the question of tho importations of dairy cattle, lu. had received the following letter from tho Prime. Minister regarding tho importation of Holstein-Frie-sian cattlo to the Dominion:—"ln reference to your letter of 3lay 11 asking for better facilities for the • importation of these cattle from Holland, South Africa, and Japan, your representations have received very careful consideration, and it is regretted that no modification can be made in the regulations." The chairman said efforts should be made to supply Australian, Amcricau, and English dairymen with New Zealand cattle. After reviewing tho prospects of the cheese market, the chairman appealed to Holstein breeders to breed up good herds of purebred Friesian cattle, so as to place New Zealand dairymen in the most profitable position as regards production. The report w-as adopted. It was decided that no further entries be accepted for the Herd Book unless application is accompanied by entfanco fees. Tho election,of officers resulted: Patron, Jlr. J. O. It was decided to ask all breeders' associations to co-operato with a view to getting purebred stock carried at halfprice oil tho railways, also animals that are in crates carried by express trains. A further resolution was carried that the Government be approached with a view to having the quarantine fees abolished on pedigree cattlo imported by kqedora and lumorsj
