THEATRE ROYAL SITE.

COVENANT TO REBUILD,

Application w.as made to the Leaseholds Committee of the City .Council yesterday by Messrs. John Fuller and Song for an extension of time within which to fu»ul their covenant to erect a new building on the Theatre Royal site. Mr. T. Young appeared for Messrs. Fuller and Sons. Mr. Young 6aid his clients were under teovenant to pull down the Theatre Royal and to put up buildings on the site by October 1. They had come to the conclusion that ther<* was, no room for. another theatro in Wellington, especially since the erection of the .new Opera House, and they had determined that it ,was not prudent to build a theatre there. Ther had now to make arrangements to' erect some other form of building, and .there was difficulty in raising money on corporation leases, which were n °t very popular just now He urged that it was a matter of no consequence to tho council .when- his clients fulfilled their covenant, as they were bound to do it eventually. The rent they were paying was quite an adequate rental for tho land, and in their, own interests Messrs. Fuller would soon have to put up a building which would earn some revenue. They asked now for an extension of twelve months. In Teply to questions, Mr. Young said that since the lease had been renewed, the firm had never made application for extension. An extension of 18 months had previously been granted in order to make the leases of several sections acquired by them fall in at the same time. Then it had been their intention to erect a. new theatre. He said he did not suppose they would make any further application, but it would in any case bo for the council to say whether any such application would jje granted or not. The committee is considering the application.
